South Tyrol brings very different forms of recovery — thermal baths, mountain air and a therapeutic tunnel — together in a small area, and is reachable from Bolzano in 1h 40min.

The region is compact. From Bolzano Airport you reach Merano in 30 minutes, the Alpe di Siusi in 45, and the upper Ahrntal (Valle Aurina) in one and a half hours. Between those points lie around 300 kilometres of landscape as the crow flies, ranging from the Mediterranean valley floor to the glacier — a variety that hardly any other Alpine region offers in such compressed form.

Correspondingly varied are the options. Merano has focused on spa treatment since 1836 and has, with the Thermal Baths, the largest wellness centre in the region. On the Alpe di Siusi and in Val Gardena, altitude and mountain air take the lead. In Predoi in the Ahrntal, guests ride the mine train into the Climate Tunnel, where the humid, pollen-free air is used therapeutically. And in Brixen the spa segment mixes with wine and a city — a combination unique in South Tyrol.

What all regions share is the density of hotels with in-house spa facilities. South Tyrol has the highest proportion of wellness hotels in the Alps — many family-run and in the third or fourth generation. Sauna, pool and treatments are here typically part of the room rate, not an extra offering. That noticeably distinguishes South Tyrolean spa hotels from most other Alpine destinations.

Which wellness regions are there in South Tyrol?

The most important wellness regions lie at different altitudes and therefore have quite different characters. Merano is the classic spa town on the warm valley floor. The Alpe di Siusi and Val Gardena sit at 1,200 to 2,000 metres. The Ahrntal in the far north has, with the Climate Tunnel at Predoi, a special option for allergy sufferers. All are reachable within an hour and a half from Bolzano.

The valley regions around Merano and Bolzano work year-round; there it is mild even in winter. The higher elevations have two seasons: June to October for hiking and mountain huts, December to March for skiing and winter wellness.
