Why Alta Badia?

What makes Alta Badia special?

Alta Badia is a high Ladin valley at 1,300 to 1,700 metres in the heart of the UNESCO Dolomites, with an unusually high concentration of starred restaurants.

Alta Badia is the upper Val Badia, with the villages of Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val. Around it stand the Sella, Puez and Fanes groups, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. The official languages are Ladin, German and Italian — an unusual constellation you'll notice in every road sign, menu and conversation.

In summer the mountain cable cars lift you effortlessly to 2,000–2,500 metres, from where many trails run almost level. The surrounding Dolomite passes — Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, Passo Valparola — can be driven or cycled, and each one opens up a new view of the massifs. In autumn, September and October offer the clearest skies of the year.

In winter the Sellaronda ski circuit starts in Corvara — the classic tour around the Sella massif through four valleys. And in the evenings: in the Michelin Guide 2026, 25 stars go to South Tyrol, several of them to this valley. Alongside them stand traditional taverns with Ladin cuisine — Schlutzkrapfen ravioli, Turtres cakes, barley soup and game — the two ends of the same table.

What is there to do in Alta Badia?

Alta Badia has two full seasons and quiet weeks in between. In summer, cable cars, mountain huts and passes are open; in winter, the ski operation connects to Dolomiti Superski. The cuisine is remarkable in both seasons, from Ladin farm inns to Michelin-starred kitchens. The three official languages you'll hear along the way are part of the character — nowhere else in the Dolomites is Ladin culture as visible and lived as here.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Ladin is an independent Romance language spoken in Alta Badia, Val Gardena and a handful of neighbouring valleys by roughly 30,000 people in total.

In Alta Badia it is an official language alongside German and Italian, and it is taught in schools. You'll notice it on all road signs, in menus and in the everyday exchanges of locals with each other. Cultural traditions such as Ladin cuisine (Schlutzkrapfen, Turtres, Cajincí), music and craftsmanship are still very much alive today — visible especially at village festivals and in the museums along the valley.
