At 1h 15min, Brač is the fastest-reachable seaside destination from Bolzano, and the airport lies on the island itself.
Brač lies off the Dalmatian coast, opposite Split, and is Croatia's third-largest island. Even so, things are quieter here than in many coastal towns on the mainland. The island is known for its white limestone and for the Zlatni Rat, the pebble spit near Bol that changes shape with the wind. Around the coast are pebble bays and pine forests reaching almost down to the water.
For families, the journey is the key argument. The flight from Bolzano takes 1h 15min, the airport sits on the island, and it's another 30 minutes to Bol on the south coast. You're in your hotel just over two hours after leaving Bolzano — with no ferry, no changes, and no packing children into a hot car for hours on the motorway.
The beaches are mostly pebble beaches, the water is clear and shelves gently in many places. Water shoes are still sensible. When is the best time to visit Brač with children?
The season runs from May to October. In May the island is green and empty, but the sea is still fresh — for children usually too cold. June is one of the best months: warm, swimmable and still quiet. July and August bring temperatures above 30°C and the most visitors, especially in Bol — school holiday time for Italian and Central European families. September is our favourite: warm sea, mild days, noticeably fewer visitors and lower prices. October remains mild but the first hotels start to close.
