Why the Val d'Ega?

What defines the Val d'Ega?

The Val d'Ega lies just 20 kilometres east of Bolzano, right in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, and is reachable in 30 minutes from the airport.

The Val d'Ega (Eggental) begins just east of Bolzano and climbs up between the massifs of the Rosengarten (Catinaccio) and the Latemar. The villages of Nova Levante (Welschnofen), Nova Ponente (Deutschnofen), Obereggen and Lago di Carezza (Karersee) sit between 1,000 and 1,550 metres — high enough for pleasant summers and reliable snow in winter. Locals speak both Italian and German.

The Rosengarten is the region's symbol. At sunset its walls turn a distinctive reddish glow, said in legend to come from the rose garden of Dwarf King Laurin. Below it lies Lago di Carezza — one of the most photographed mountain lakes in the Alps, small in size but striking, with the Latemar reflected in its turquoise water when the surface is calm.

In summer, trails run into the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park; in winter, two ski areas operate: Latemar-Obereggen between 1,550 and 2,500 metres, and Carezza on the flanks of the Rosengarten — together around 90 kilometres of pistes. Both belong to Dolomiti Superski. Obereggen is one of South Tyrol's most reliable snow areas thanks to its altitude and its FIS World Cup slope, and it offers night skiing until 10pm.

What is there to do in the Val d'Ega?

The Val d'Ega is compact and easy to explore. In summer it's about hiking around the Rosengarten and Latemar; in winter about two ski areas with around 90 kilometres of pistes. And because Bolzano is only 20 kilometres away, day trips into the city — the Museum of Archaeology, arcades, wine bars — are on the table too. This makes the valley one of the most versatile bases in the Dolomites.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Lago di Carezza sits at around 1,520 metres at the foot of the Latemar and is one of the most photographed mountain lakes in the Alps — when the water is still, the Latemar and its surrounding forest mirror perfectly in the turquoise surface.

It is small and can be walked around in a few minutes, but attracts crowds in July and August; better early in the morning or in shoulder season. Parking has been reorganised recently, and there is a small entrance fee.
