The Merano area is the ring of villages around the town: Scena (Schenna), Tirolo (Dorf Tirol), Avelengo (Hafling), Marlengo (Marling) and the Passiria (Passeier) Valley. Most sit between 400 and 1,400 metres on the slopes above the valley floor — sun terraces with views over the Adige (Etsch) valley and the Texel group.
The difference from the town is noticeable. It's quieter up here, the air is cooler in the evenings, and hiking trails begin at your doorstep instead of after a bus ride. Down to Merano is ten to twenty minutes depending on the village, so the Thermal Baths are still an easy afternoon trip. This works particularly well as a combination: a walking day above, spa day below.
Here you'll also find the highest density of wellness hotels in the region — Scena alone has more properties than the town of Merano itself. Many houses are family-run, with panoramic pools facing the valley and treatments using regional ingredients. Add the Waalwege irrigation trails — old maintenance paths along the mountain streams, almost level and running through orchards. When is the best time to visit the Merano area?
The Merano area works almost year-round. It's at its loveliest in spring, when from late March the apple blossom rolls through the valley, and in autumn during the grape harvest. October is the classic Törggelen month; the Merano Wine Festival takes place in early November.
