City Break · Prague · Direct Flight from Bolzano to Prague

A capital you don't need to split into three districts — Prague fits into two or three days because distances are short and the classic sights sit close to one another. And you pay around a third less than for comparable cities further west.

Planning Prague

How do you plan a Prague city break?

Two to three days is enough. Split the old town, castle and Jewish quarter across three half-days and expect prices well below Western European capitals.

Prague is well covered in two to three days. The city divides into a few clearly distinct districts: the Staré Město old town with the Old Town Square, Malá Strana below the castle, and the Jewish Quarter of Josefov. Between them runs the Vltava with Charles Bridge.

A sensible plan works in half-days. Morning to the old town with the Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge; afternoon to Prague Castle (climb up via Nerudova street); day two to the Jewish Quarter with the Old Cemetery and one museum — the Kafka Museum, the National Museum on Wenceslas Square, or Strahov Monastery with its Baroque library. A third day makes room for a café, the Vyšehrad, or a beer tasting at one of the historic breweries.

On price, Prague is noticeably cheaper than comparable Western European capitals, above all for gastronomy, public transport and smaller hotels. Dinner at a good restaurant often comes to a third of Vienna or Munich prices. Public-transport tickets are valid across bus, tram and metro together and are remarkably inexpensive.

How do you split the days in Prague?

A sensible division follows the geography of the Vltava. Day one belongs to the right bank with the old town, Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge; day two to the left bank with Malá Strana, Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral; an optional third day to the Jewish Quarter and a museum of your choice. Every district is largely walkable.

When should you time a Prague city break?

Prague has a continental climate — hotter summers and colder winters than Western Europe. Loveliest are May and September: mild, long days, and fewer crowds than in peak season. July and August are hot and busy, with many visitors then converging on Charles Bridge. April and October bring cool but mostly dry weather and noticeably lower hotel prices. Winter is cold and often grey, but museums are empty and prices at their lowest. From late November to early January the Christmas Market opens on Old Town Square, one of Central Europe's most atmospheric.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes, largely.

The old town, Malá Strana and the Jewish Quarter lie on foot from one another; Prague Castle you reach by a climb up Nerudova street or a short tram ride. Trams and metro you really need only for further-flung sights such as the Vyšehrad, Strahov Monastery or the return late at night. Wear good shoes: the old town has a lot of cobblestones.
