Why Tre Cime?

Why ski in the Tre Cime region?

The area sits directly beneath the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, links five mountains into 115 piste kilometres, and is markedly quieter than the major Dolomite areas.

The 3 Zinnen Dolomites area lies in the Alta Val Pusteria, in the far eastern corner of South Tyrol on the border with East Tyrol. Five mountains are linked into one connected area: Monte Elmo (Helm), Croda Rossa (Rotwand), Stiergarten, Monte Baranci (Haunold) and Signaue — together 115 piste kilometres. The name refers to the three rock towers of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo — the most famous Dolomite formation, part of the UNESCO Dolomites World Heritage.

The pistes are long, wide and north-facing — well suited to carving and snow-reliable into spring. Monte Elmo and Croda Rossa form the core with around 67 connected kilometres; Monte Baranci near San Candido is the most family-friendly sector, with a fun park and night skiing until 10pm. Stiergarten and Signaue lie further afield and are served by a free skibus. The ski pass covers all five mountains.

What sets the region apart is the tone. Here you get Dolomite atmosphere without the crowds of Val Gardena or Alta Badia, plus Puster Valley taverns serving Schlutzkrapfen ravioli and speck dumplings. And for those who don't only ski alpine: the Alta Val Pusteria has over 200 kilometres of cross-country tracks — the largest cross-country network in Italy — and was a Tour de Ski venue. The route Dobbiaco–Cortina d'Ampezzo along the disused railway line is one of Italy's classic cross-country routes.

Which ski areas belong to Tre Cime?

The 3 Zinnen Dolomites link five mountains across Sesto (Sexten), San Candido (Innichen) and Dobbiaco (Toblach). Monte Elmo and Croda Rossa are directly connected and form the core. Monte Baranci near San Candido is the family mountain. A free skibus connects the sub-areas, and a single ski pass covers all five mountains.

Which flights are available to South Tyrol (Bolzano)?

SkyAlps flies direct to Bolzano from Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, Copenhagen, Warsaw, London and other cities — flight time 1h – 2h. All prices are per person and include return flights plus nights at the booked hotel.

When is the best time for a ski holiday in the Tre Cime?

The season starts in early December and ends in early April. The Alta Val Pusteria is one of South Tyrol's snowiest regions, and because many pistes are north-facing, snow holds for a long time. January and February offer the most reliable conditions, especially in the second half of January. February is the most expensive month due to the school half-term holidays. March brings sunshine and longer days, with still-good snow up high, and is one of the most attractive months of the season.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The direct flight to Bolzano takes one to two hours depending on the departure city.

From the airport, the transfer runs through the Val Pusteria into the Alta Val Pusteria — around 90 minutes to Sesto, San Candido or Dobbiaco. Total travel time from your departure airport: around four-and-a-half to five hours. Alternatively, the Val Pusteria railway runs from Fortezza (Franzensfeste) to San Candido, connecting to the ski area by skibus. Compared with the car journey from northern Germany, that's significantly faster.
