Why South Tyrol?

Why is South Tyrol good for a family holiday?

A short journey without changes, cable cars on almost every mountain, and a high density of hotels set up for families.

The biggest advantage is the journey. The direct flight to Bolzano takes one to two hours, then 30 to 90 minutes' transfer depending on the destination. By car from northern Germany that would be around ten hours — a difference you notice sharply with small children. There is no changing to worry about, the airport is small and easy to manage, and prams can be checked in at the aircraft door.

On the ground, the mountain lifts make many things easier. Almost every interesting mountain has a cable car, so children arrive at the top without first having to climb a thousand vertical metres. Many paths on the high plateaus are flat and pram-friendly — including the Panoramic Trail on the Alpe di Siusi or the paths around Compatsch. Anyone who'd prefer more altitude takes a chairlift.

On top of that comes a hotel category rarely found elsewhere. South Tyrolean family hotels typically have children's pools, playrooms and supervised programmes, often with fixed childcare times in the morning and afternoon. For parents that means: spa day is really possible even when the kids come along. Half-board with dedicated children's meals is common — children can eat earlier and go to bed, while adults have a proper dinner.

Which regions are suitable for families?

The regions have different strengths. Plan de Corones is the most strongly aimed at children, with an adventure park, petting zoo and children's climbing route. The Alpe di Siusi scores with flat, car-free paths. Merano is the choice if water and city matter more than the mountain — Thermal Baths with a children's area, gardens with a children's zone, and short distances in the town.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Family hotels in South Tyrol are their own category with clear standards.

Typical features include a separate children's pool, play and craft rooms, childcare with fixed times in the morning and afternoon, and dedicated meal times for younger guests. Many houses have petting zoos, adventure playgrounds and their own trails on the property. For infants, cribs, changing rooms and warm-food services (baby food) are common. Half-board is the standard, and staff often speak German, Italian and English.

When is the best time for a family holiday?

For families, travel dates are usually set by the school holidays. June is the pleasantest summer month: cable cars are running, mountain huts are open, and it's still quiet. July and August are warm and busy — that's when higher destinations are more pleasant than the valley. September is our favourite for anyone who can travel outside school-holiday weeks: mild, quieter, and prices lower. In winter, the two weeks after Epiphany and the first week of March are the ski holidays for many countries — Alpine ski areas are especially busy then. Christmas and New Year are among the most expensive weeks.
