Why the Plose?

Why ski on the Plose?

The Plose is a manageable, rarely crowded area directly above Brixen — with a proper town as its base instead of a ski village.

The Plose is the house mountain of Brixen. The gondola starts in Sant'Andrea, seven kilometres outside the town, and takes you to 2,050 metres; the Pfannspitz cable car continues to 2,545 metres. From there the view opens onto Sass de Putia (Peitlerkofel) and the Odle (Geisler) group — the northernmost mountains of the UNESCO Dolomites.

The area is smaller than the big Dolomite carousels, and precisely for that reason it's interesting. The pistes are wide and mostly of medium difficulty, waiting times are short, and even in the school holiday weeks it stays manageable. Anyone who doesn't fancy Sellaronda queues finds enough terrain here: 43 piste kilometres served by around 15 lifts, plus long valley descents down to Sant'Andrea.

The real difference lies in the valley. Instead of a purpose-built lift village, you have Brixen — a town from the 10th century — as your base: cathedral with cloister, arcaded shopping streets, wine bars, the Acquarena with seven sauna cabins for a rest day and, three kilometres outside town, Novacella Abbey. That opens up a completely different range for evenings and rest days than a purely ski-focused location does.

How is the Plose ski area laid out?

The Plose is clear: one main axis up from Sant'Andrea, and a branching piste network at the top with sweeping views of the Dolomites. The valley descents are long, the pistes wide, and the crowds moderate. Down in the valley lies Brixen with everything a town offers for the evening, plus a spa, wine cellar and old town for rest days — a combination unusual in South Tyrol.

When is the best time for a ski holiday on the Plose?

The winter season starts in early December and ends in early April. In late November Brixen's Christmas Market on the cathedral square opens — one of the oldest in South Tyrol; the combination of a ski day and the market in the evening is a reason of its own for December. January and February bring the most reliable snow, with the school half-term holidays in February. March is often the most pleasant month: still-good snow up top, more sun, quieter pistes. In April the operation winds down. In November and May the ski area is closed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For most, it's enough.

The Plose is compact, but the descents are long and the queues short, so on a given day you'll clock significantly more vertical than in a large area with long approaches. If you need new terrain every day, on two days you can visit neighbouring areas — Gitschberg-Jochtal is 25 minutes away, Val Gardena or the Alpe di Siusi about 40. All belong to Dolomiti Superski, so the Superski pass is worthwhile for that constellation.
