Why Vipiteno?

Why ski in Vipiteno?

Three ski areas on a single ski pass, a mountain lift straight from the town centre, and Italy's longest floodlit toboggan run.

Vipiteno (Sterzing) sits in the Wipptal, just before the Brenner Pass, and is a small town with a medieval pedestrian zone and merchants' houses from the mining era. All around lie three ski areas: Monte Cavallo, Racines-Giovo and Ladurns, together 66 piste kilometres. All three can be skied on a single Wipptal ski pass, and a ski bus connects the base stations.

The distinctive point is the link between town and mountain. The Monte Cavallo mountain lift starts five minutes on foot from the centre and takes you in twelve minutes right into the ski area — you need neither a car nor a ski bus. The area itself has around 20 piste kilometres between 960 and 2,176 metres, mostly of medium difficulty, and is well-suited to short ski holidays and mixed groups.

Racines-Giovo is the largest of the three with 28 piste kilometres between 1,300 and 2,150 metres, considered particularly snow-reliable thanks to its proximity to the Alpine main ridge. Ladurns, at 18 kilometres, is the smallest and most family-friendly. All three are more affordable than the classic Dolomite carousels; ski pass and rental gear cost noticeably less. For beginners, families and cruising skiers, this makes Vipiteno one of the best-value ski destinations in South Tyrol.

Which ski areas are there around Vipiteno?

The three areas lie a few kilometres apart and can be skied on a single ski pass, with a ski bus connecting them. Monte Cavallo is the town's house mountain; Racines-Giovo the largest and most snow-reliable; Ladurns the small, family one. All lie between 950 and 2,200 metres — not glaciated, but reliably snow-covered thanks to their location on the Alpine main ridge.

When is the best time for a ski holiday in Vipiteno?

The season runs from around early December to end of April, longer than in many Dolomite areas — the proximity to the Alpine main ridge ensures snow reliability into spring. January and February bring the most reliable conditions, and March is one of the best months, with sun and still-good snow, especially at Racines-Giovo. In April the smaller areas close first; Racines-Giovo often stays open into the end of the month. Between mid-December and early January, the "Christmas of the Bells" (Weihnacht der Bells / Glockenweihnacht) with its famous nativity scenes takes over the town — one of South Tyrol's most atmospheric.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Wipptal ski pass covers all three ski areas of the region — Monte Cavallo, Racines-Giovo and Ladurns — with a total of 66 piste kilometres.

A ski bus connects the base stations so you can change area daily without a car. For a week's stay, it's significantly cheaper than the Dolomiti Superski pass and offers enough variety for varied levels. If you also want to ski at Val Gardena or Alta Badia, day tickets there can be added.
