The Val Venosta lies in the west of South Tyrol and stretches from Merano to the Resia Pass. In its side valleys lie the highest ski areas in the region: Solda at the foot of the Ortles, and the glacier area in the Val Senales (Schnalstal), both rising to over 3,200 metres.
Solda (Sulden) sits in the Stelvio National Park, between 1,900 and 3,250 metres, and offers 44 piste kilometres. All around stand fourteen three-thousand-metre peaks — including the Königsspitze, Zebrù and the Ortles, at 3,905 metres the highest mountain in South Tyrol. Winter operations run from late October to early May, one of the longest ski seasons in Italy. Solda is a favourite of ski-tourers, freeriders and skiers who want reliable snow at both ends of the season.
The Val Senales to the north is a glacier ski area that opens as early as mid-September. On the Grawand summit sits the Iceman Ötzi Peak viewing platform at 3,251 metres, named after the discovery site of the glacier mummy nearby. For families, the smaller areas of Trafoi (Trafoi), Watles (Vatles) and Belpiano (Schöneben) at the Resia Pass are more suitable, all of them quieter and easier on the wallet.

Which ski areas are there in the Val Venosta?
The Val Venosta is not one carousel but a series of independent areas. Solda is the largest and highest, with high-alpine scenery in the Stelvio National Park. The Val Senales skis on the glacier and opens first of any South Tyrolean area. Trafoi, Watles and Belpiano at the Resia Pass are smaller and more affordable — good for beginners, families and short breaks.
