Why South Tyrol?

Why is a ski holiday in South Tyrol worthwhile?

South Tyrol brings together twelve major ski areas, most within the Dolomiti Superski network with around 1,200 piste kilometres — reachable by direct flight to Bolzano.

The most important practical advantage is the arrival. The direct flight to Bolzano takes 1h 40min, and the transfer into the ski area 30 to 90 minutes depending on destination. By car over the Brenner Pass, from northern Germany that would be around ten hours, with heavy congestion at weekends. By plane, you're at your hotel on Friday afternoon and out on skis on Saturday morning — practically without a driving day.

Once on the ground, the Dolomiti Superski pass takes over: around 1,200 piste kilometres and 450 lifts in twelve ski regions, usable on a single ticket. The best-known linkage is the Sellaronda, a ski circuit around the Sella massif crossing Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa — around 40 kilometres of pistes and lifts in a full-day loop. Alongside it, the individual regions offer their own local ski passes for those staying in a single area.

The regions differ more than the shared numbers suggest. In the west lies Solda at 1,900 to 3,250 metres, operating from late October to early May. In the east lie the Dolomite areas with sun and wide carving pistes. In between sit Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi for scale, Plan de Corones as a family region, and Tre Cime di Lavaredo (3 Zinnen) for quiet plus Italy's largest cross-country network. That leaves enough choice for very different holiday profiles under one flight destination.

Which ski areas are there in South Tyrol?

Broadly, there are two worlds. The Dolomite areas in the east — Plan de Corones, Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Tre Cime, Alpe di Siusi — are large, sunny and connected through Dolomiti Superski. The glacier areas in the west, Solda and Val Senales, sit higher and have a longer season, but are more compact and less linked. Add local areas such as the Plose near Brixen, Racines-Giovo, Latemar-Obereggen or the Ahrntal — each smaller, but often quieter and easier on the wallet.

When is the best time for a ski holiday in South Tyrol?

In the Dolomite areas the season starts in late November or early December and ends in early to mid-April. January and February bring the most reliable snow conditions; February is the most expensive month because of the school half-term holidays. March is popular for its sun and longer days, with still-good snow at higher altitudes. Solda and Val Senales operate from late October or early November well into May. Christmas, New Year and half-term breaks are peak periods; the last week of January and the first weeks of March are noticeably quieter and cheaper.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Dolomiti Superski pass covers around 1,200 piste kilometres and 450 lifts in twelve regions, and is worthwhile if you want to switch areas — for the Sellaronda, for example.

If you're staying a week in a single area, a local ski pass is usually cheaper and enough for the whole week. Skibus connections between the regions are included, so day trips within Dolomiti Superski work well. Multi-day tickets (three to six days) are the most common purchase.
