Why Merano?

What defines Merano as a destination?

Merano has been a spa town since 1836, enjoys the mildest climate in South Tyrol and combines Thermal Baths, old town and gardens all within walking distance.

Merano (Meran in German) sits at 300 metres in a valley basin open to the south and sheltered by mountains. The result is a climate you rarely find in the Alps: palm trees along the Kurpromenade, around 300 sunny days a year, and mild winters. Empress Sisi came from Vienna for her winter cures in the 1870s, and the boulevards, promenades and gardens laid out at that time still shape the town today.

Everything is within walking distance. The Thermal Baths — with 15 pools and 25 treatment rooms — sit right in the town centre; five minutes further on begin the Portici (Lauben), the medieval arcaded shopping street. Along the Passirio river run the Kurpromenade and the Winter Promenade — a couple of shaded, tree-lined kilometres in the middle of town, popular in every season.

On the hillside above lie the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle: 12 hectares with 80 garden landscapes, voted Italy's most beautiful garden in 2005, alongside a museum inside the castle itself. All around, the sun terraces of Scena (Schenna), Tirolo (Dorf Tirol) and Avelengo (Hafling) look down onto Merano — traditional South Tyrolean villages with wine and orchard country, all within 20 minutes of the town centre.

What is there to do in Merano?

Merano has two centres that combine well in a single day. The Thermal Baths sit in the heart of town, right on the Passirio. The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle start a 15-minute walk up the hillside. All around run the Waalwege — trails along historic irrigation channels — connecting orchards, vineyards and the sun-terrace villages. For day trips, the western Dolomites and the Ortles group are both within reach, though the town itself lies just outside the classic Dolomites region.

When is the best time to visit Merano?

Merano has no real off-season, but noticeable differences between months. April to June is the time of the gardens — Trauttmansdorff opens in late March, the valley blooms. In high summer the basin gets hot, and that's when the outdoor pools and hillside villages of Scena, Tirolo and Avelengo become the more comfortable option. September and October bring wine harvest and Törggelen; the Merano Wine Festival draws visitors from across Europe in early November. Winter is quieter but does not stand still: the Thermal Baths, the Christmas Market and the Merano Ice Skating Rink attract short-break travellers looking for mild days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Waale are irrigation channels that for centuries have carried water from mountain streams to the orchards and vineyards of the sun terraces.

Along these channels run maintenance paths, now used as hiking trails. Because the water always follows a gentle downhill gradient, the trails are almost level — ideal for walks that are relaxed but never monotonous, always with views over the Merano basin. Well-known routes include the Marlinger Waalweg and the Algunder Waalweg, both easily reached from Merano.
