Why Plan de Corones?

What defines the Plan de Corones region?

Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) is a summit plateau at 2,275 metres with two museums and a starred restaurant — reachable by cable car, year-round.

Plan de Corones is the house mountain of Brunico (Bruneck) and sits at the northern edge of the Dolomites. Its summit at 2,275 metres is a broad, flat plateau reached by cable cars from Riscone, Valdaora, Perca and the Passo Furcia. Neither a chapel, a peak cross nor a summit path is what makes it distinctive — architecture and museums do.

The summit has hosted the MMM Corones since 2015 — the sixth Messner Mountain Museum, designed by Zaha Hadid and mostly buried inside the mountain. Alongside it, Museum LUMEN has told the story of mountain photography at 1,700 square metres since 2018 — three floors covering the technical history of photography and works by international mountain photographers. And in the same building sits AlpiNN, the restaurant of three-starred chef Norbert Niederkofler.

All around lies the Val Pusteria, with Brunico as its small town and the Fanes-Sennes-Braies and Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Parks. In summer there are hiking trails, bike routes and family activities; in winter, 119 kilometres of pistes and one of the most reliable ski areas in the Alps thanks to its exposed position. On several days of the year, Kronplatz hosts the FIS Ski World Cup on the Erta slope.

What is there to do at Plan de Corones?

Plan de Corones is unusual as a mountain: architecture, museums and cuisine up top; the small town of Brunico down below. The two can be combined in a single day. In summer the mountain is noticeably quieter than in winter, but the museums are open year-round. The scale of the ski area, the density of infrastructure and the short cable-car journeys make Kronplatz — despite the summit being at 2,275 metres — one of the most accessible Dolomite peaks.

When is the best time to visit Plan de Corones?

The mountain has two seasons. In summer, roughly from late May to early November, the cable cars run and both museums are open daily, usually from 10am to 4pm. These months are noticeably quieter than winter, with June and September the most pleasant. Winter runs from early December to Easter — thanks to the exposed altitude, the ski area is one of the most reliable in South Tyrol; Christmas, New Year and February are peak weeks. In November and May the cable cars stand still, and access to the museums is limited.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The MMM Corones is the sixth and final of the Messner Mountain Museums, opened in 2015 on the summit plateau.

It is devoted to traditional alpinism and to the great faces. Zaha Hadid designed it: the building sits mostly inside the mountain, three concrete apertures point toward Peitlerkofel, Heiligkreuzkofel and Marmolada. The exhibition is smaller than in the other MMM museums and is quickly explored, but the architecture alone is worth the visit. Alongside it, the Museum LUMEN focuses on mountain photography and AlpiNN serves lunch and dinner from three-starred chef Norbert Niederkofler.
