Beach Holiday · Menorca · Direct Flight from Bolzano to Menorca

A Balearic island without hotel high-rises. Menorca has been under biosphere protection since 1993 — what's missing is the bed towers; what remains are coves you sometimes reach on foot.

Menorca

Direct flight from Bolzano to Menorca (1h 45min) + hotel + 15-minute transfer. The island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993 — which is why there is hardly any high-rise development, and instead a scatter of individual coves with shallow entry.

Why Menorca?

What defines Menorca?

Menorca has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993 — building density is correspondingly low, and the island lives on its individual coves with shallow entry.

Menorca is the north-easternmost of the Balearic Islands and the quietest. Since 1993 the entire island has been under Biosphere Reserve protection, which has strictly limited building heights and development — there is no continuous hotel front and hardly any high-rise construction.

Instead, the character is set by the calas: small, deeply cut coves with pale sand and very shallow water. Many lie at the end of dirt tracks and can only be reached on foot via a short path through pine forest — precisely why they are not overrun. The south coast in particular is known for coves of this kind: Cala Macarella, Cala Turqueta, Cala Mitjana. The north coast is rougher and windier, with less-visited bays.

The two towns lie at opposite ends of the island: Mahón (Maó) in the east, with one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean; Ciutadella in the west, with a dense old town from the era of shifting rule. Around the entire island runs the Camí de Cavalls, a historic bridle path of about 185 kilometres, today marked as a hiking trail — a way of getting to know Menorca on foot, one stage at a time.

What is there to do on Menorca?

Menorca is an island for people who take their time. The bays lie scattered along both coasts, and between them the Camí de Cavalls runs the full loop around. Mahón and Ciutadella are the only larger towns, and lie at opposite ends.

When is the best time to visit Menorca?

The season runs from May to October. May is mild and green, but the sea is still cool — though it's the best time for the Camí de Cavalls. June is warm, swimmable and quiet. July and August bring heat and the largest crowds, though visitors spread out across the many coves better than on other islands. September is our recommendation: warm sea, mild days, noticeably fewer visitors. October is mild but the first hotels start to close. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the route.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The calas on the south coast are deep, narrow bays with little swell and very shallow sandy entry; the water stays shallow for a long way out.

For small children, that's close to ideal. Bear two things in mind: small bays have no lifeguards, and the last stretch to the water sometimes runs over a short forest path — not always pushchair-friendly. Better-served with facilities are Cala Galdana or Son Bou; more secluded are Cala Macarella and Cala Mitjana.
