Why Ibiza?

What defines Ibiza?

Ibiza combines a lively south with a quiet, wooded north — and Dalt Vila, the old town above the harbour, is UNESCO World Heritage.

Ibiza belongs to the Balearic Islands and lies in the western Mediterranean. Its reputation is shaped by its nightlife, though this is concentrated in a few zones in the south and west — around Ibiza Town, Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio. Away from those areas, the island shows a very different face: small villages, pine forests and quiet bays.

The north is another country. There the island is sparsely populated, with pine forests, small coves and villages where little happens. Anyone looking for quiet should choose accommodation there — the drive from one end of the island to the other is barely an hour, so day trips to Ibiza Town remain easy.

Dalt Vila, the fortified old town above the harbour of Ibiza Town, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. It climbs in terraces, surrounded by Renaissance fortress walls; at the top stand the cathedral and the castle. From the walls the view stretches over harbour, salt pans and the sea. In the evenings the alleys fill up but never as noisily as the beach zones — the historic core lives its own rhythm.

What is there to do on Ibiza?

Ibiza divides into a lively south and a quiet north. In the south lie Ibiza Town with Dalt Vila, the salt pans and the better-known beaches; in the north lie pine forests and small coves. Formentera is reachable by ferry in around half an hour and works well as a day trip. For a first stay of a week, a base in the north makes sense — quiet during the day, Ibiza Town in the evening.

When is the best time to visit Ibiza?

The season runs from May to October. May is mild and green, but the sea is still cool. June is warm, swimmable and still relatively quiet. July and August are peak season in every way — heat, packed beaches, high prices and the full club scene. September is our recommendation: warm sea, mild days, noticeably fewer visitors. October is mild but the first clubs start to close. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the route.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes, and this surprises many.

The nightlife concentrates in a few zones in the south and west; the north of the island is wooded, sparsely populated and quiet, with small coves that are sometimes reachable only via tracks. Add the old town of Dalt Vila with its history reaching back to the Phoenicians, hiking on the marked trails of the interior, and the yacht harbour of Ibiza Town — Ibiza has plenty to show beyond the clubs. Two full days for the north, one for Ibiza Town, one for Formentera works well.
