Why Copenhagen?

Why a city break in Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is compact, flat and cycling-friendly — the Metro takes you from the airport to the centre in 15 minutes.

Copenhagen sits on the island of Zealand on the Øresund and is the capital of Denmark. The city is compact and flat, which makes it probably the most cycling-friendly metropolis in Europe — a large share of residents cycle daily, and rental bikes are available at every corner. The inner city is largely a pedestrian zone; Strøget is one of the longest pedestrianised shopping streets in the world.

The best-known image is Nyhavn, the canal lined with colourful gabled houses and wooden boats. Alongside it stand Amalienborg Palace, the residence of the royal family; Rosenborg Castle with the Crown Jewels; and Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park from 1843 right in the middle of the city — the second-oldest of its kind in the world. Everything lies within walking distance from the central axis Strøget – Kongens Nytorv – Nyhavn.

In culinary terms, Copenhagen has built a reputation over the past two decades that stretches well beyond Scandinavia — new Nordic cuisine was invented here. If you don't want to eat at the Michelin-starred end, you'll find the direction just as clearly in market halls and street-food venues such as Torvehallerne or Reffen. Prices are noticeably higher than in Italy, but so is the quality — and lunch menus offer accessible entry points to restaurants that would be far pricier in the evening.

What is there to do in Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is best explored by bike. The inner city with Nyhavn, Strøget and Tivoli is compact; Christianshavn sits on the other side of the canal, and the north with Rosenborg Castle and the Botanical Garden joins on. Everything is walkable, faster still by bike. In summer, the harbour baths draw locals into the middle of the city — designated swimming areas in cleaned harbour water.

When is the best time to visit Copenhagen?

From May to September Copenhagen is at its finest: the days are very long, terraces and harbour baths are open, and the city lives outdoors. July and August are the warmest months, but rarely hot. Autumn turns grey and windy quickly, and daylight fades fast. From mid-November to end of December Tivoli reopens in its Christmas lights — a highlight for many first-time visitors in the low season. January and February are cold and dark; you get the museums almost to yourself, and hotel prices drop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Metro runs directly from the terminal into the centre and takes around 15 minutes to Kongens Nytorv, near Nyhavn.

It runs around the clock, every few minutes during the day. Alternatively, regional trains serve the central station. Tickets are available from machines at the airport, from an app, or contactless with a card. For onward travel across Denmark and to Sweden, the airport station is directly connected to the main railway line — Malmö is reachable in 25 minutes across the Øresund Bridge.
