Why a trip to Billund?
Billund is the birthplace of Lego, home to the world's first Legoland park from 1968 and to the Lego House — and the airport lies ten minutes away.
Billund lies in central Jutland and is a small town whose significance rests entirely on one company: in 1932, the carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen founded a workshop for wooden toys here, which grew into Lego. The name is a contraction of the Danish "leg godt" — "play well". Today Lego employs several thousand people in Billund, and the town has grown up around the company. It is one of the smallest destinations in the SkyAlps network — a place you fly to because of one specific attraction.
In 1968, the first Legoland park opened right next to the factory. It is still in operation today and is noticeably smaller and quieter than the later spin-offs — for families with younger children, exactly that is the advantage. The Miniland with its recreations of Danish and international landmarks — millions of bricks, several months of assembly time each — is the centrepiece of the park.
In 2017, the Lego House joined it, designed by the Danish architecture studio BIG as a stack of oversized bricks. It is not an amusement park but an experience house for building and experimenting — and architecturally distinctive enough to draw visitors who otherwise wouldn't travel to Billund. The roof terraces are freely accessible and offer a view over the town — a good way to see the place without paying admission.
What is there to do in Billund?
Billund itself is manageable, and the programme accordingly clear: Legoland and Lego House. Both are within walking distance of each other. For longer stays, Jutland all around is worthwhile — the North Sea coast, Aarhus as Denmark's second-largest city, and the Viking landscapes around Jelling, a UNESCO World Heritage site with runestones from the 10th century. A rental car makes sense for that; distances within Jutland are longer than the map suggests.

When is the best time to visit Billund?
The travel season depends on Legoland: the park is open roughly from April to end of October, with the longest opening hours in July and August. In winter it is closed apart from short specific periods. The Lego House, in contrast, is open year-round. If your reason for coming is Legoland, plan for the summer season; in May, June and September it is significantly quieter than in July and August. For architecture-focused visitors interested only in the Lego House, winter can also be a good time — quieter and cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
The park is aimed mainly at children between around three and twelve.
There are rides for different age groups, but no big roller coasters for teenagers — anyone seeking thrills is in the wrong place. The Miniland, with its recreations of world monuments in Lego, is fascinating for adults too, but a whole day is a lot without children. Waiting times are lowest in the shoulder months and on weekdays; in July and August queue times can climb notably. A two-day ticket often makes sense, as one full day is short for the entire park.
