Planning Berlin

How do you plan a Berlin city break?

Allow three to four days, book Museum Island and the Reichstag dome in advance, and choose your quarter deliberately.

Berlin has no centre — it has several. That changes planning: instead of a route through an old town, you pick quarters and work through them one at a time. Between any two destinations, 30 to 45 minutes on the S-Bahn or U-Bahn is normal — anyone who doesn't plan for that spends the trip in transit. Prioritise: two or three quarters plus one or two attractions per day, no more.

Two things have to be booked in advance. For the Pergamon Museum and the Neues Museum there are timed tickets, which sell out days ahead in high season. And the Reichstag dome, though free, requires registration with ID at least a few days beforehand via the Bundestag website. Anyone who forgets both loses two of the city's most iconic attractions.

The neighbourhood you stay in shapes the trip more strongly than in other cities. Mitte is practical for sights but touristy in the evenings. Prenzlauer Berg is quieter and good with children; Kreuzberg and Neukölln are livelier and gastronomically the most interesting. Charlottenburg in the west is the elegant, calmer variant. Rule of thumb: for a first visit → Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg; for a repeat visit → Kreuzberg or Neukölln.

How do you split three days in Berlin?

A structure that works: day one Mitte with Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag. Day two contemporary history — Bernauer Straße, East Side Gallery, one museum. Day three a quarter away from the centre, with market and park instead of sights. This way you see very different Berlins without exhausting yourself.

When should you time a Berlin city break?

From May to September Berlin is at its best outdoors: parks, beer gardens and open-air events run, and it stays light late. July and August are warm and, because of the school holidays, not as crowded as you'd think. Autumn is mild and good for museums. December brings the Christmas Markets — Gendarmenmarkt is the classic. January and February are grey and cold — but the cheapest, with museums almost empty.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For the Pergamon Museum and the Neues Museum there are timed tickets, sold out days or weeks ahead in high season — book online before you fly.

The Reichstag dome is free to visit but requires advance registration with ID via the Bundestag website. Both are quick to sort out, but easily forgotten and then no longer available on the day. For special exhibitions and popular concerts, book too. Everything else — Brandenburg Gate, East Side Gallery, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe — is freely accessible.
