Why ski in the Ahrntal?
The Ahrntal is Italy's northernmost valley, with two ski areas of its own and located off the main tourist routes.
The Ahrntal runs from Campo Tures (Sand in Taufers) north-east to Predoi (Prettau), Italy's northernmost village. It is framed by the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park with numerous three-thousand-metre peaks and the Zillertal Alps on the Austrian border.
Skiing takes place on two opposite sides of the valley: Klausberg near Steinhaus (Cadipietra) and Speikboden near Luttach (Lutago). Both areas can be skied on a shared ski pass and are connected by a ski bus. The pistes are mostly of medium difficulty, wide and largely north-facing, so snow holds for a long time — a plus in the second half of the season. Together, both areas offer around 45 piste kilometres.
The valley is not a mass destination. It lies at the end of the road, with no through-traffic, and the villages have kept their rural character. Anyone looking for the Sellaronda and après-ski scenes is in the wrong place. Anyone wanting quiet after the ski day — and perhaps a visit to the Climate Tunnel at Predoi — will find it here. In summer, the same valley works as a hiking region; in winter it belongs to skiers, cross-country skiers and snowshoe walkers.
Which ski areas are there in the Ahrntal?
