Why is Merano good for a couple's holiday?
Merano combines thermal baths, old town and gardens over short walking distances, is mild year-round and reachable in 30 minutes from Bolzano Airport.
Merano sits at 300 metres in a south-facing valley basin. Palm trees along the Kurpromenade, around 300 sunny days a year, and mild winters — that is why the Viennese aristocracy came here in the 19th century. Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) spent two winters at Trauttmansdorff Castle for treatment, and the town has kept that lightly imperial character ever since. Today it works particularly well for couples seeking short distances and mild weather.
Everything lies close on foot. The Thermal Baths, with 15 pools and 25 treatment rooms, sit right in the middle of town; five minutes further on begin the Portici (Lauben), the medieval arcaded shopping lane. Along the Passirio (Passer) river run the Kurpromenade and the Winter Promenade — a couple of shaded, tree-lined kilometres in the middle of town, popular in every season.
For the evening, Merano offers more than most spa towns: wine bars in the Portici, cuisine between Alpine and Mediterranean, and from October the Merano Wine Festival. Adults-only houses lie partly in the town, partly in Scena (Schenna) and Tirolo (Dorf Tirol), a few hundred metres higher up on the sun terraces — with views over the whole basin.
What does Merano offer for a couple's holiday?
Merano has two centres that combine well in a day. The Thermal Baths lie in the town core, right by the Passirio and next to the Portici. The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle start 15 minutes' walk further up the hillside. In between run the promenades and the Waalwege irrigation trails through orchards and vineyards. The Adults-Only houses are mostly in the town, with the wider setting spreading up to Scena and Tirolo — twenty minutes' drive above.

When is the best time to visit Merano?
Merano has no real off-season, but noticeable differences. April to June is the season of the gardens — Trauttmansdorff opens in late March, the valley blooms. In high summer the basin gets hot, and that's when the outdoor pools and the shaded park become the more comfortable option. September and October bring the grape harvest and Törggelen; the Merano Wine Festival draws visitors from across Europe in early November. Winter is quieter but does not stand still: the Thermal Baths, the Christmas Market and the Merano Ice Skating Rink attract short-break travellers.
Frequently asked questions
Yes.
The Thermal Baths do have a family area, but the sauna world sits in a separate wing reserved for adults. It's quietest on weekdays in the late morning and early evening. If you want more quiet still, stay in your own hotel's spa: the Adults-Only houses in Merano usually have generous spa areas with saunas, a relaxation room and a heated outdoor pool. Combine both — Thermal Baths as an experience day, hotel spa on the rest days.
