Why Val Gardena?

Why is Val Gardena a good wellness destination?

Val Gardena sits at 1,200 to 1,560 metres right in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites and combines altitude with an unusually dense hotel scene.

Val Gardena (Gröden) has three villages: Ortisei (St. Ulrich) at 1,236 metres, Santa Cristina and Selva (Wolkenstein) at 1,563 metres. They line up along the same valley, each a few kilometres from the next. Official languages are Ladin, German and Italian — and Ladin culture is clearly present, in road signs, in cuisine and in daily life.

The mountain is quickly reachable from anywhere. From Ortisei, the Seceda cable car climbs in about four minutes to 2,450 metres, straight to the most famous ridge in the Dolomites. On the opposite side of the valley, a gondola takes you onto the Alpe di Siusi at around 1,900 metres — the largest Alpine meadow in Europe. That means: two very different mountain landscapes within an hour, both directly from the village.

What distinguishes Val Gardena from purely mountain villages is the substance in the valley. Ortisei was for two centuries an international centre of woodcarving, and the craft is still very present: workshops, the Museum Gherdëina and a dedicated school of applied arts. The wellness hotels sit close to the pedestrian zone and combine walking distance to shops and restaurants with a mountain view — a combination hard to find elsewhere in the Dolomites.

What wellness experiences does Val Gardena offer?

The wellness offering sits in the hotels — Val Gardena has one of the highest densities of houses with an in-house spa in the Dolomites. In addition, in Ortisei the public indoor pool Mar Dolomit offers a sauna world. The two house mountains lie on opposite sides of the valley: Seceda with its striking ridge and the wide Alpe di Siusi meadow. Both are reachable directly from the village, so you can change scenery within an hour.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

From Bolzano Airport it's around 45 minutes to Ortisei, another ten minutes to Selva.

The route runs on the Brenner motorway to Chiusa (Klausen) and from there up into the valley. With the transfer you're taken directly to the hotel. Alternatively, buses run from Bolzano and from Chiusa station into all three villages. Within Val Gardena the Mobilcard makes buses free, and hotel shuttles run to the lift stations.
