Why Alpe di Siusi?

Why is the Alpe di Siusi good for families?

The meadow is closed to private cars during the day and largely level — many paths are pram-friendly.

The Alpe di Siusi, at 56 square kilometres, is Europe's largest Alpine meadow and lies between 1,680 and 2,350 metres. Unlike most mountain regions, the terrain here is largely flat — a wide plateau rather than steep slopes, framed by the Sciliar (Schlern), Sassolungo (Langkofel) and Denti di Terrarossa (Rosszähne). That makes it a landscape where children can move about safely without steep drops right beside the trail.

The car rule is decisive for families: between 9am and 5pm, access is closed to private cars. Guests staying up top may drive to their hotel at set times; all others take the gondola from Siusi (Seis). During the day you're walking on paths practically without traffic — for parents an unusually relaxed situation. Along the way there are also playgrounds, animal enclosures and themed trails set up especially for children.

Many paths are wide, gravelled and without significant gradient, so a pram works fine. Along the way lie numerous working alpine huts — you rarely find yourself an hour from the nearest food with hungry children. Distances are short: from Compatsch to the next hut it's usually 20 to 40 minutes' walk. And if children have had enough of walking, chairlifts and gondolas take you back down to the plateau or into the villages.

What does the Alpe di Siusi offer for families?

Up on the plateau it's about movement without exertion: wide paths, open views, cows and alpine huts. Down in Castelrotto (Kastelruth), Siusi (Seis) and Fiè allo Sciliar (Völs) sit the villages with playgrounds, pools and the gondola base station. Both are connected by bus and gondola.

When is the best time to visit the Alpe di Siusi with children?

Summer begins as soon as the snow retreats, usually in late May. June is particularly lovely, because the bloom starts and there's still little going on. July and August are warm and the main travel period for families, when it's busier on the main paths — off them, it stays quiet even then. September and October bring clearer views and cool mornings; the cattle drive down is a highlight in mid-September. Winter runs from December to March, with reliable snow, ski schools and toboggan runs. November and April/May are shoulder seasons — many hotels on the meadow close entirely then.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A large portion, yes.

Around Compatsch and towards Saltria run wide, gravelled paths with no significant gradient, well suited to prams. For higher sections towards Puflatsch or the Denti di Terrarossa (Rosszähne) you need a child carrier — a chairlift or the Puflatsch gondola makes it easier. Booking tip: for pram-only families, choose a hotel on the plateau, so you don't have to take the pram up in the morning and back down at night — carrier packs are also available to rent at hotels.
