Planning Gothenburg

How do you plan a Gothenburg city break?

Two days for the city, a third for the archipelago. A single public transport ticket covers tram and island ferry.

Gothenburg is compact enough for two days: inner city with Avenyn and canals, the wooden-house district of Haga, the fish market Feskekörka, and the Liseberg amusement park in the middle of the city. The tram network is one of the largest in Scandinavia and covers practically every relevant destination. The historic centre works on foot; for Liseberg and Haga you may not even need a ticket.

The third day belongs to the archipelago. Take the tram to Saltholmen and from there the ferry — both on the same regular public transport ticket. The southern islands are car-free; there are paths, bathing spots and a few local places to eat. For many, this is the part of the trip they remember most; hardly any other city has a natural landscape this close, accessible with a bus ticket.

When planning, take daylight into account. Gothenburg lies far north: in June it barely gets dark, in December darkness falls in the early afternoon. That changes drastically how much you can do in a day — and whether the archipelago is really worthwhile. From May to September, three days are enough; in winter, focus on the inner city and the Christmas lights at Liseberg.

How do you split the days in Gothenburg?

City and islands work as two separate blocks. In the city, Haga, Avenyn, canals and Liseberg lie close together. For the archipelago you'll need a whole day, because the journey and ferry timings set the rhythm.

When should you time a Gothenburg city break?

Daylight decides everything here. From May to September the days are long; in June it barely gets really dark — that's the time for the archipelago, terraces and Liseberg. July and August are warmest, though rarely truly hot. From October it turns dark and wet quickly. From mid-November to end of December the Christmas lights come on at Liseberg — one of the largest and most atmospheric Christmas events in northern Europe. January and February are dark and cold, but hotel prices drop; go for the museums, not for the archipelago.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

From the centre, take the tram to Saltholmen; there the ferries depart to the southern archipelago islands.

Both are covered by the regular public transport ticket, so you don't need a separate boat tour. The islands are car-free; there are marked paths, bathing spots and small local restaurants. The best-known islands are Styrsö, Vrångö and Brännö — the last a favourite among locals for Sunday evenings, especially in summer. A round trip with a stop for lunch and a swim takes around five to six hours.
