Why Plan de Corones?

Why is Plan de Corones good for a couple's holiday?

Plan de Corones combines a summit plateau at 2,275 metres with architecture, museums and cuisine — reachable by cable car, no hike required.

Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) is the house mountain of Brunico (Bruneck) and sits on the edge of the Dolomites. Its summit at 2,275 metres is a broad, flat plateau reached by several cable cars from Riscone, Valdaora and San Vigilio. You need neither fitness nor equipment to get up — the summit is fifteen minutes' cable-car ride from the base station. Up top the terrain is flat, and the paths between mountain station, museums and restaurant are short.

Since 2015 the summit has hosted the MMM Corones, the sixth Messner Mountain Museum, designed by Zaha Hadid. The building is largely buried inside the mountain and opens with windows in all four directions. In the redesigned old mountain station next door sits Museum LUMEN, three floors on mountain photography — from technical history to works by international photographers.

In the same building sits AlpiNN, the restaurant of Norbert Niederkofler. His concept, "Cook the Mountain", works consistently with what the region provides — around 90 percent of ingredients come from within a 100-kilometre radius. For a restaurant at 2,275 metres, that's unusual — and a good reason to plan an afternoon on the mountain around lunch or dinner.

What does Plan de Corones offer for a couple's holiday?

Plan de Corones is unusual for a mountain: architecture, museums and cuisine at the top; down in the valley, Brunico with its old town and shops. Both can be combined in a single day. In winter the mountain is the largest ski area in the Val Pusteria; in summer noticeably quieter, but the museums are open year-round. Around the mountain lies the Val Pusteria with Lake Braies and the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park — enough for further days.

When is the best time to visit Plan de Corones?

The mountain has two seasons. In summer, roughly from late May to early November, the cable cars run and both museums are open daily — usually 10am to 4pm, last admission at 3:30. These months are markedly quieter than winter. From early December to Easter the ski operation runs, and Kronplatz is then one of the most reliable snow areas in South Tyrol. In November and April/May the cable cars stand still, and access to the museums is limited.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The MMM Corones is the sixth and final of the Messner Mountain Museums, opened in 2015 on the summit plateau.

It is devoted to traditional alpinism and to the great faces. Zaha Hadid designed it: the building sits mostly inside the mountain, with three concrete apertures pointing towards Peitlerkofel (Sass de Putia), Heiligkreuzkofel and the Marmolada. The exhibition is smaller than in the other MMM museums and is quickly explored, but the architecture alone is worth the visit.
