Why the Val di Funes and Luson?

What defines the Val di Funes and Luson?

Two rural side valleys near Brixen, with no major ski circuits — Val di Funes beneath the Odle group, Luson on the Rodengo-Luson alpine meadow.

The Val di Funes (Villnöss) branches off the Val d'Isarco at Chiusa (Klausen) and ends beneath the Odle (Geisler) group, whose jagged peaks belong to the Puez-Odle Nature Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. The villages of San Pietro, Santa Maddalena and Tiso lie between 900 and 1,300 metres — small, farming settlements without high-rise hotels.

The valley's most famous view is of the small church of San Giovanni in Ranui, a Baroque chapel with the Odle peaks as its backdrop — one of the most photographed sights in South Tyrol. More important for a longer stay are the trails: the Adolf Munkel Trail runs along the northern flank of the Odle, mostly through light woodland and past mountain huts, with the rock walls in constant view — considered one of the most scenic high-altitude walks in the Dolomites.

Luson (Lüsen) lies on the opposite side of the Val d'Isarco and is even quieter. Above the village stretches the Rodengo-Luson alpine meadow — a wide, gently rolling area with views onto the Sass de Putia (Peitlerkofel) and the Odle group. In summer it's a grazing pasture with mountain huts; in winter, ski-touring and snowshoe country without a lift infrastructure. The absence of an alpine ski area is deliberate: the valleys have preserved a rural character rarely found elsewhere in South Tyrol.

What is there to do in the Val di Funes and Luson?

Both valleys are hiking country, not sightseeing destinations. The Val di Funes offers the more spectacular backdrop with the Odle peaks; Luson the wider alpine meadow landscape. Those looking for quiet who enjoy walking will find more here than in the more famous valleys — but you'll also find fewer restaurants, no gondolas onto every peak, and no après-ski scene. That's exactly the point.

When is the best time to visit the Val di Funes and Luson?

The main season runs from June to October. June and July bring blooming alpine meadows, September and October clear views and the traditional cattle drive down (Almabtrieb). Because both valleys lie off the main routes, it stays relatively quiet even in August. In winter there is no alpine ski operation, but ski-touring and snowshoe terrain on the Rodengo-Luson meadow — an ideal region for anyone seeking low-key winter breaks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Adolf Munkel Trail runs along the foot of the Odle peaks, mostly through light woodland and past alpine meadows, with the rock walls in constant view.

It is considered one of the most scenic high-altitude walks in the Dolomites and is technically mostly easy — good footwear is enough, no climbing required. From the trailhead at the Zannes car park (Zanser Alm), it's about three to four hours as a loop, with mountain huts for a stop. In summer it can be busy on weekends; on weekdays outside the peak weeks, quiet is still the rule.
