Why the Tre Cime Dolomites?

What defines the Tre Cime region?

The Alta Val Pusteria sits directly beneath the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen), belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, and is quieter than the famous Dolomite valleys further west.

The region lies at the far eastern edge of South Tyrol, on the border with East Tyrol, with the villages of Sesto (Sexten), San Candido (Innichen) and Dobbiaco (Toblach). Above them rise the Tre Cime di Lavaredo — the most famous rock towers in the Alps and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

In summer, the Tre Cime Nature Park is the central destination. The classic loop starts at Rifugio Auronzo and circles the massif in a few hours — scenically spectacular, though heavily visited in high summer. Quieter alternatives lie in the valleys around it: the Val Fiscalina (Fischleintal) or the Val di Landro (Höhlensteintal), both with easier trails and less traffic.

In winter, 3 Zinnen Dolomites links five mountains into 115 kilometres of pistes. Cross-country skiing is just as important: the Alta Val Pusteria has over 200 kilometres of tracks — the largest cross-country network in Italy — and was once a Tour de Ski venue. Add to that toboggan runs, ski touring routes and a Nordic-focused hotel scene rather than an après-ski one.

What is there to do in the Tre Cime area?

The region has two clear seasons. In summer, it's about hiking and climbing in the Tre Cime Nature Park; in winter, skiing and cross-country. In between lie quiet weeks when many businesses close. The villages of Sesto, San Candido and Dobbiaco stay grounded in Puster Valley tradition — this is a less polished, more authentic side of the Dolomites.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The usual starting point is Rifugio Auronzo, reached via a paid toll road from Misurina.

From there, the classic loop circles the massif in several hours, with mountain huts along the way for a stop. In high summer the road is sometimes closed once parking is full — arrive early or use one of the shuttle services from Cortina, Dobbiaco or Sesto. Alternative approaches without the toll road start from the Val Fiscalina or via Lake Landro.
