Why Paris?

Why a city break in Paris?

Paris packs a density of museums, architecture and gastronomy into a small area that's unmatched in Europe — the Louvre alone would justify the trip.

Paris is the capital of France and, with around two million inhabitants across its central arrondissements, one of Europe's most densely populated cities. The centre is organised into twenty arrondissements that spiral outwards from the first (Louvre). What defines Paris is the combination of historical fabric, cultural density and an everyday culture built around cafés, boulangeries and bistros.

The classic sights all lie within the tight city core. The Louvre, with more than 35,000 works on display, is the most visited museum in the world; the Musée d'Orsay in a converted railway station holds the world's most important Impressionist collection; the Centre Pompidou covers 20th- and 21st-century modern art. Notre-Dame reopened in December 2024 after the 2019 fire and is once again open to the public.

Paris is expensive — above all for hotels and restaurants. If you care about length of stay and location, book your hotel several months in advance. As a counterweight, keep an eye on weekly markets, boulangeries and bistros with a lunchtime menu — that's where Parisians eat too, and noticeably cheaper than à la carte in the evening. Public transport by metro and RER, by contrast, is inexpensive and runs on a dense schedule.

What is there to do in Paris?

Paris isn't small, but the central arrondissements lie close enough that much of it links up on foot or with a couple of metro rides. A sensible split follows the two banks of the Seine: the Louvre, the Marais and Montmartre in the north on the Right Bank; the Musée d'Orsay, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Eiffel Tower on the Left Bank.

When is the best time to visit Paris?

Paris has a temperate climate without real extremes. Loveliest are spring and early autumn: April to June are mild, the parks are in bloom, the days grow longer. July and August are warm to hot, and many Parisians take holidays themselves in August — the city then feels quieter, but a number of restaurants close for the summer. September and October bring mild weather and lower crowds. Winter is grey and damp, but museums are less busy and prices lower. From late November to early January, Christmas lights on the Champs-Élysées and the Christmas markets add atmosphere.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Charles de Gaulle Airport lies about 25 kilometres north-east of the centre.

Cheapest and often quickest is the RER B, which runs directly to Gare du Nord and on to Châtelet — around 35 to 45 minutes depending on the time of day. Alternatively, the Roissybus service to Opéra, and transfer services or taxis, which need 40 to 70 minutes depending on traffic. The Le Bus Direct service has since been discontinued. For early or late arrivals, a pre-booked transfer is worth considering.
