Why Gothenburg?

Why a city break in Gothenburg?

Gothenburg combines a compact harbour city with the offshore archipelago islands — reachable on regular public transport.

Gothenburg has around 600,000 inhabitants, making it Sweden's second-largest city, and sits on the west coast at the mouth of the Göta älv river. The city was laid out in the 17th century on a Dutch model — hence the canals that still cross the centre today. The port shaped Gothenburg for centuries; today the shipyards have made way for cultural venues and residential districts, and Volvo still remains the city's largest employer.

The centre is manageable: Avenyn as the main street, with museums and restaurants; Feskekörka, the fish market by the canal; and Haga as the oldest district, with preserved wooden houses and cafés. The Liseberg amusement park lies in the middle of the city and is one of the largest in Scandinavia — the entrance is a 15-minute walk from the main station.

The real difference from other cities lies just offshore: the archipelago, a chain of hundreds of islands. The southern archipelago islands are car-free and reachable by ferry, which is part of the public transport system — all you need is a regular ticket. On a warm summer day you're out on a granite rock by the sea within 40 minutes of the centre. On the largest islands there are restaurants and beaches; on the smaller ones just a jetty and quiet.

What is there to do in Gothenburg?

Gothenburg divides neatly into two parts: the compact city with canals, Haga and Liseberg, and the archipelago just off it. Two days are enough for the city; for an archipelago day, plan a third — the ferry is part of the public transport network. In summer the days are extraordinarily long, so evenings on the harbour or in the archipelago stretch out for hours.

When is the best time to visit Gothenburg?

Gothenburg lies far north, so the difference between the seasons is large. From May to September the days are long — in June it barely gets truly dark; that's the season for the archipelago, terraces and Liseberg. July and August are the warmest months, though rarely hot. Autumn turns wet and windy, daylight fades fast. In November the first Christmas lights come on at Liseberg — one of the largest Christmas markets in northern Europe. From December to February the city is dark and quiet; museums are open, restaurants too, but the outdoor programme largely disappears.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

From the centre you take the tram to Saltholmen, and from there ferries depart to the southern archipelago islands.

Both are usable with a regular public transport ticket — you don't need a separate boat tour. The islands are car-free; there are restaurants, granite bathing rocks and a few village-scale settlements. The best-known islands are Styrsö, Vrångö and Brännö — the latter, a favourite Sunday spot for locals, especially on summer evenings. A round trip with a stop for lunch and a swim takes around five to six hours.
