Why Düsseldorf?

Why a city break in Düsseldorf?

Düsseldorf is compact, quickly reached, and combines an old town, shopping streets and modern architecture within short walking distances.

Düsseldorf lies on the Rhine and is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. The old town is small, dense and known for its pub density — the nickname "the longest bar in the world" comes from the sheer number of taverns packed into a tight space. What's drunk here is Altbier, a dark top-fermented beer of the Lower Rhine, poured fresh from local house breweries — Uerige, Schumacher, Füchschen — and served on small trays.

A few steps further on begins the Königsallee — "the Kö" — the central shopping street, lined on both sides by a canal shaded with chestnuts. To the north lies the Hofgarten, and to the south the Rhine Promenade, which became one of the city's central meeting places after the riverside road was tunnelled underground.

The MedienHafen to the south grew out of the old commercial harbour. Here stand the curving buildings by Frank Gehry, alongside works by other renowned architects — for anyone interested in architecture, the real reason to come to Düsseldorf. And the Rhine Tower next door offers a 168-metre viewing platform over city, river and, on clear days, all the way to the Bergisches Land.

What is there to do in Düsseldorf?

Düsseldorf can be crossed in a single day. The old town and the Königsallee lie side by side; from there the Rhine Promenade leads in around half an hour on foot to the MedienHafen. For art there is the Art Collection North Rhine-Westphalia (K20 and K21), plus the museum quarter around Ehrenhof. In the evenings, the old town fills up. For weekend visitors, two nights are enough for the essentials; three if you want to add Kaiserswerth or an excursion to Cologne.

When is the best time to visit Düsseldorf?

From May to September Düsseldorf is at its most pleasant — the Rhine Promenade and the terraces are lively, and the evenings stay light for a long time. The climate is mild and rarely extreme, though rain falls regularly throughout the year. In February the Carnival takes over the city — the "fifth season" with parades, especially on Rose Monday, and hotels booked out well in advance. In late July, the Rhine fun fair (Kirmes) draws visitors from across the region. And from late November, the Christmas Market covers Marktplatz, Altstadt and Schadowplatz.

Frequently asked questions

Düsseldorf Airport lies to the north of the city and is connected by its own long-distance train station and an S-Bahn stop.

It's around 20 minutes to the centre. A SkyTrain links the terminals with the station. Alternatively, the transfer takes you straight to the hotel. In the city itself you don't need a car — the old town, the Kö and the MedienHafen are walkable, and the U-Bahn and tram cover the rest.
