What can you reach from Preveza?
From Preveza, Lefkada is reachable via a short bridge without a ferry — the island has the most spectacular beaches in the Ionian.
Preveza lies on the Greek mainland at the mouth of the Amvrakikos Gulf. The airport mainly serves as gateway to Lefkada, which is only separated from the mainland by a narrow channel and reached via a movable bridge — no ferry, no timetables. From the airport you're on the island in around 15 minutes.
Lefkada's west coast is the reason for the trip. Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma lie below steep white limestone cliffs, and the water is intensely turquoise. Access sometimes runs down long staircases, and because the coast is open to the sea there is regularly wind and swell. The photos of Porto Katsiki with the sheer wall behind the beach are among the most-shared images of Greece.
The east coast is quieter and flatter, with places like Nidri and small offshore islands reached by boat. On the mainland the Amvrakikos Gulf is worthwhile — a shallow inland sea with birdlife — and the ancient site of Nikopolis north of Preveza, founded by Augustus after the victory at Actium in 31 BC. For a mixed programme of beach, boat trips and antiquity, the region works well.
Which beaches can you reach from Preveza?
Lefkada has two very different coasts. The west side is spectacular but open to the sea, with steep access and swell. The east side is sheltered, flatter and better suited to families — and the starting point for boat trips to the offshore islands. For a first stay, a base on the east coast around Nidri is often the pragmatic choice; for photography-focused visits, hotels near the west coast.

Which flights are available from Bolzano to Preveza?

When is the best time to visit Lefkada?
The season runs from May to October. May is green and mild, though the sea is still cool. June is warm and quiet. July and August bring heat and the largest crowds; the west coast then often has afternoon wind, unpleasant for swimming but excellent for windsurfing. September is our recommendation: warm sea, mild days, fewer visitors. October remains mild but the first hotels start to close.
