Why the Wine Road?

What defines the South Tyrolean Wine Road?

The Wine Road runs south of Bolzano through the warmest region of South Tyrol, with wineries, castles and Lake Caldaro.

The South Tyrolean Wine Road runs south of Bolzano through the Adige Valley, taking in Appiano (Eppan), Caldaro (Kaltern), Termeno (Tramin), Ora (Auer) and Salorno (Salurn). This is the warmest and lowest-lying region of the province — wine has been produced here since antiquity, and the landscape is shaped by orchards, vineyards, medieval villages and castles. Officially the road runs 70 kilometres from Nalles to Salorno, and it is Italy's oldest wine route, established in 1964.

The area's best-known wine is Gewürztraminer, named after the village of Termeno. Alongside it come Schiava (Vernatsch), Lagrein and Pinot Bianco. Most wineries offer tastings, many by prior appointment. In Caldaro a wine museum explains the history of wine-growing in South Tyrol, and every autumn the wine festivals of Termeno and Caldaro draw visitors from all over the country.

Around Appiano lies an unusual density of castles and country residences — the so-called "Castle World", including Boymont Castle, Hocheppan Castle and others, many reachable on foot. And Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See) is considered the warmest bathing lake in the Alps; in high summer it regularly reaches over 20°C, with lidos and beaches along its shore. Because the region is flat, cycling routes lead through orchards and vineyards to Bolzano, Merano and the Dolomites — a rewarding cycling area.

What is there to do on the Wine Road?

The Wine Road is flat, warm and densely settled — the counterpoint to the mountain regions. It's about wine, food and short distances between villages. Add Lake Caldaro for hot days and the castles above Appiano for those who still want to move a little. The proximity to Bolzano and the Dolomites makes the road a practical base too: on some days you tour vineyards, on others you're out in the mountains within an hour.

Frequently asked questions

Many wineries and cooperative cellars along the Wine Road offer tastings and guided tours.

The larger cooperatives have fixed opening times and sales rooms, while for small family estates you should phone ahead or book online. Standard tastings run four to six wines with cheese and cured meats, lasting around 60 to 90 minutes. Some estates offer cellar tours, others also gastronomy on site. The best-known cellars include Nals-Margreid, Kellerei Terlan, St. Michael-Eppan, Kellerei Kaltern and the Kellerei Tramin.
