Why the Ahrntal Valley?

What makes the Ahrntal Valley special?

The Ahrntal Valley is Italy's northernmost valley, ends in Predoi and lies entirely within the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park – with no through traffic.

The Ahrntal Valley (Valle Aurina) runs from Campo Tures (Sand in Taufers) north-east to Predoi (Prettau), Italy's northernmost village. It's a dead-end valley: those who come here want to be here. That shows in the villages, which have kept their rural character, and in the quiet off-season.

The valley is surrounded by the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park with numerous three-thousand-metre peaks and the Zillertal Alps on the Austrian border. The trail network ranges from flat valley walks along the Ahr river to high-alpine tours. In winter, skiing takes place on two opposite sides of the valley — at Klausberg and Speikboden.

A particular curiosity lies at the very end of the valley, in Predoi. Inside the former copper mine, worked for 500 years, is the Climate Tunnel (Klimastollen). At around 95 percent humidity, the air is free from pollen and dust — a form of respiratory therapy that exists nowhere else in Italy.

What is there to do in the Ahrntal Valley?

The valley lives outdoors. In summer, trails lead from flat valley loops along the Ahr river all the way up to three-thousand-metre peaks; in winter there are two ski areas, cross-country trails and toboggan runs. Two additional fixed points: the show mine in Predoi and Taufers Castle at the valley entrance.

From June to September the mountain huts are open and the high-altitude trails snow-free; July and August are peak season, June and September noticeably quieter. Winter runs from December well into April, with reliable snow thanks to the northern location. In November and May there is little going on and many businesses close. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The direct flight to Bolzano takes one to two hours depending on the departure city.

From the airport the transfer goes over the Brenner motorway into the Puster Valley and, near Brunico (Bruneck), into the Ahrntal Valley – around 90 minutes to Luttach, Steinhaus or further in. Total travel time from your departure airport: about three-and-a-half to four hours. Alternatively, the Val Pusteria railway runs to Brunico, from where buses continue into the valley. Within the valley itself, a dense bus network connects the villages.
