Why Warsaw?

Why a city break in Warsaw?

Warsaw's old town was entirely reconstructed after its Second World War destruction and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1980.

Warsaw was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War, the old town systematically demolished after the Uprising of 1944. Reconstruction from 1945 onwards followed old plans and the city views of the painter Bernardo Bellotto (also known as Canaletto) — that is why the buildings today so closely resemble their 18th-century state. On the market square you stand in a place that in 1945 was rubble and today looks as if nothing ever happened.

In 1980, UNESCO added the old town to its World Heritage list — expressly as an example of a successful reconstruction. Around it lies modern Warsaw: the Palace of Culture and Science from the 1950s, a far-visible legacy of the Soviet era, and a rapidly changing central business district with high-rises. The city has changed dramatically over the past two decades, and the pace is still noticeable today.

Two museums shape the city's image for visitors: the Warsaw Uprising Museum and POLIN, the museum of the history of the Polish Jews. Both are elaborately staged and each demand several hours. For quiet, there is Łazienki Park — an English landscape garden with palace, orangery and free open-air Chopin concerts on summer Sundays.

What is there to do in Warsaw?

Warsaw is more spread out than most cities in the SkyAlps network but well-connected. The old town forms the historic core; south of it runs the Royal Route to Łazienki Park; west lie the Palace of Culture and the modern city centre. The museums lie further out and are reachable by tram or metro. For a first visit, three full days work well: one for the old town and the Royal Route, one for museums, one for the modern city and a district such as Praga on the far bank of the Vistula.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Warsaw's old town was almost entirely destroyed in the Second World War and reconstructed from 1945 onwards.

Old building plans and the city views of Bernardo Bellotto from the 18th century served as the templates. In 1980 UNESCO added it to the World Heritage list — expressly as an example of a successful reconstruction, at a time when historic reconstruction was not universally considered proper conservation. Today it is one of the largest coherent old towns in Poland; that it isn't original in substance is largely invisible.
