Why Prague?

Why a city break in Prague?

Prague has one of Europe's best-preserved historic centres, the largest medieval castle complex in the world, and prices well below those of Western European capitals.

Prague lies on the Vltava at the heart of Bohemia and is the capital of the Czech Republic. It came through the Second World War largely intact, and it shows: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Art Nouveau stand shoulder to shoulder. The Staré Město old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.

Prague Castle above the Vltava spans around 70,000 square metres — the largest coherent castle complex in the world and the official residence of the President. On the grounds stand St Vitus Cathedral with the Bohemian crown jewels and the Golden Lane, where Franz Kafka worked for a time. The climb alone is worth it for the view over the city.

On price, Prague is an argument in itself. Restaurants, public transport and museums cost noticeably less than in Vienna, Munich or Paris. Dinner at a good restaurant often comes to a third of Western European prices. For a city break with genuinely good value, Prague is one of the clearest options in Europe.

When is the best time to visit Prague?

Prague has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Most pleasant are May and September: mild, long days, and fewer crowds than in peak season. July and August are hot and busy, with many visitors then converging on Charles Bridge. Winter is cold and often grey, but the museums are empty and prices low. From late November to early January the Christmas Market opens on Old Town Square, one of Central Europe's most atmospheric.

Frequently asked questions

Václav Havel Airport lies north-west of the centre.

From the terminal the Airport Express runs direct to the main station (around 35 minutes), or alternatively bus route 119 to Nádraží Veleslavín metro station and from there line A into the centre. By taxi or transfer it's 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Public-transport tickets are valid across bus and metro together and are very inexpensive.
