Why Dresden?

Why a city break in Dresden?

At 1h 20min, Dresden is the fastest-reached German destination, and offers a baroque old town concentrated in a small area.

Dresden lies on the Elbe and was for centuries the residence city of the Saxon Electors. It owes its baroque face above all to Augustus the Strong. In February 1945, the inner city was largely destroyed in air raids; what you see today is almost entirely a reconstruction, mostly to the original plans and largely using original materials. That gives the old town an unusual density — every building here has been through this process.

The Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) is the symbol of it: it lay as a rubble mountain until 1993 and was rebuilt by 2005, using thousands of salvaged original stones, still recognisable today by their darker colouring. Around it stand the Zwinger palace with the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Semper Opera and the Royal Palace — all within a few minutes' walk of each other.

The museums are exceptional for a city of this size. The Green Vault holds the treasure chamber of the House of Wettin; the Old Masters Picture Gallery in the Zwinger houses, among other works, Raphael's Sistine Madonna. Everything lies within a few minutes' walk. Along the Elbe stretch the Brühl Terraces, dubbed the "Balcony of Europe" — a raised riverside promenade with views onto the Neustadt on the far bank.

What is there to do in Dresden?

Dresden is compact: the most important buildings and museums all lie in the old town, only minutes apart on foot. On the other side of the Elbe lies the Neustadt, the going-out district with pubs and shops. Both are connected by the Augustus Bridge, which is a pedestrian and tram bridge. For a first visit, two full days for the old town, plus a third day for the Neustadt or a trip to Saxon Switzerland, work well.

When is the best time to visit Dresden?

From May to September Dresden is at its best: the Elbe meadows and terraces are lively, paddle steamers cruise the river, and evenings stay light for a long time. July and August are warm and busier. Autumn brings mild weather and fewer visitors. In December the Striezelmarkt runs on Altmarkt square — Germany's oldest Christmas market, first documented in 1434. January and February are quiet and cold, but the interiors — Green Vault, opera, museums — are open year-round.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Two full days are enough for the old town, the Frauenkirche and one or two museums.

If you want to see both the Green Vault and the Picture Gallery, plan a third day — both are substantial and worth taking slowly. Because everything lies within walking distance in the old town, distances are short. If you'd like to add a trip to Saxon Switzerland or the porcelain city of Meissen, allow another day.
