Why Berlin?

Why a city break in Berlin?

Berlin is the largest city in the SkyAlps network, reachable direct in 1h 30min, with the UNESCO Museum Island and the traces of a divided city.

With around 3.7 million inhabitants, Berlin is Germany's largest city and, by area, one of the largest in Europe. That shapes how you visit it: instead of a compact old town, there are several centres, each with a very different character. Mitte for classic sights, Kreuzberg and Neukölln for food and nightlife, Prenzlauer Berg for young families and cafés, Charlottenburg for the West Berlin flair, Friedrichshain for club culture. Public transport connects them all — day tickets are cheap, and taxis are affordable by international standards.

The Museum Island in the centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, uniting five houses including the Pergamon Museum and the Neues Museum with the bust of Nefertiti. Around it lie the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag with its walkable glass dome, Unter den Linden with the State Opera and Humboldt University, and Museum-Island-adjacent, the Humboldt Forum in the reconstructed City Palace.

Division is still present in the cityscape today. The East Side Gallery along the Spree is the longest preserved section of the Wall; the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße shows the original border strip. To understand how the city grew back together, walk along Bernauer Straße or take the Wall Trail by bike — a two-hour journey through 40 years of divided history.

What is there to do in Berlin?

Berlin has no single centre but several. Mitte gathers the classic sights, Kreuzberg and Neukölln stand for gastronomy and nightlife, Charlottenburg for palace and shopping streets. Plan on distances — with the S-Bahn and U-Bahn you're quick to get around, but you can lose time on the wrong routes. For a first visit, spend two days in Mitte with the Museum Island, one day on the Wall history and one day in a district of your choice. For four or five days, you'll experience the differences between neighbourhoods properly.

When is the best time to visit Berlin?

Berlin is a year-round destination, but the differences are large. May to September are the most pleasant months — parks, beer gardens and outdoor events are in operation, and the evenings stay light for a long time. July and August can be hot; then the city's lakes — Schlachtensee, Wannsee, Müggelsee — draw locals out. October brings colour to Tiergarten and Grunewald, but temperatures already drop. From late November to Christmas, the Christmas Markets on Gendarmenmarkt, Alexanderplatz and elsewhere are in operation. In January and February the city stands quiet; you get the museums almost to yourself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

BER Airport lies to the south of the city — around 45 minutes to the centre.

From the terminal station, regional trains and the S-Bahn run directly to the central station and Alexanderplatz. Alternatively, the transfer takes you straight to the hotel, which is more practical with luggage. On the return journey, don't underestimate the airport: check-in can take longer than at smaller Bolzano-scale airports, so allow enough time.
