Why Kefalonia?

What defines Kefalonia?

Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island — mountainous, sparsely populated, with widely spaced bays and the beach of Myrtos.

Kefalonia lies in the Ionian Sea west of the Greek mainland and is the largest of the Ionian Islands. Unlike the bare Aegean islands, it is green: cypresses, olive groves and pine forests cover a mountainous interior that rises to over 1,600 metres. The population is small — around 35,000 spread across a large island. The most important towns are Argostoli, the capital in the south, and Fiskardo (Fiscardo) in the north.

The best-known beach is Myrtos on the north-west coast — a wide bay of pale pebbles between steep cliffs, most often photographed from a switchback above. The path down is steep, and the water drops off quickly. For families the flatter bays in the south, around Skala and Katelios, are more suitable. In many bays the sand fields are backed by pine forest, which reaches almost to the water.

Worth a visit besides are Melissani Cave, with its collapsed roof through which sunlight falls onto the water at midday, and the villages of Assos and Fiskardo in the north. Fiskardo was the only village largely spared by the 1953 earthquake and has therefore kept its Venetian architecture — pastel-coloured harbour houses, small cafés, wooden fishing boats. Assos sits on a peninsula with a Venetian fortress and is one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

What is there to do on Kefalonia?

Kefalonia is large, and the destinations lie far apart — without a car you'll see little. In the south lie the shallower bathing bays and the main town Argostoli; in the north sit Myrtos, Assos and Fiskardo. Between them run winding mountain roads.

When is the best time to visit Kefalonia?

The season runs from May to October. In May the island is especially green, but the sea is still cool. June is warm and still quiet. July and August bring heat and the largest crowds — then rental cars are also in short supply. September is, for many, the best month: warm sea, mild days, fewer visitors. October remains mild but the first hotels start to close. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the route, and most of the tourist infrastructure closes down.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Practically indispensable.

Kefalonia is the largest Ionian island, the places lie far apart, and between them run winding mountain roads. Bus service does exist, but is infrequent and barely covers the nicer bays. Book the car together with your holiday; supply gets tight in July and August. Roads are mostly good, but curves and steep descents demand care. For anyone staying only in the south around Argostoli, taxis and hotel shuttles can be enough for a shorter stay.
