Why the Alpe di Siusi?

What makes the Alpe di Siusi special?

At 56 km², the Alpe di Siusi is Europe's largest Alpine meadow, sits between 1,680 and 2,350 metres and is closed to private cars during the day.

The Alpe di Siusi lies in the Dolomites north-east of Bolzano, above Castelrotto (Kastelruth), Siusi and Fiè allo Sciliar. At 56 square kilometres, it is Europe's largest high-altitude Alpine meadow, stretching between 1,680 and 2,350 metres. Part of it belongs to the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park and thus to the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites.

Unlike most mountain regions, the terrain here is largely flat — a wide plateau instead of steep slopes, framed by the Sciliar (Schlern) to the south-west and the Sassolungo (Langkofel) group to the south-east. Many trails are broad and level, partly pram-friendly. The plateau is grazed by cows and horses throughout the summer and dotted with working mountain huts serving South Tyrolean cuisine.

The key to the quiet is a rule: between 9am and 5pm, access is closed to private cars. Guests staying up top may drive to the hotel at set times; everyone else takes the gondola from Siusi. The bloom lies between mid-June and mid-July, when the meadows are covered in wildflowers — the main reason many visitors come precisely then. In winter, gentle ski slopes, cross-country trails and toboggan runs stretch across the plateau; the ski area belongs to Dolomiti Superski.

What is there to do on the Alpe di Siusi?

Up on the plateau, it's about movement without effort: wide trails, sweeping views, cows and working alpine huts. Down in Castelrotto, Siusi and Fiè allo Sciliar are the villages with pools, playgrounds and the base station of the gondola. Both levels combine easily: staying up top means quiet and early starts; staying down in the valley means variety and lower prices. In winter, the Alpe di Siusi is one of South Tyrol's most family-friendly ski areas — with gentle pistes, cross-country tracks and toboggan runs on a wide, level plateau.

When is the best time to visit the Alpe di Siusi?

Summer begins as soon as the snow melts, usually in late May. The bloom lies between mid-June and mid-July and is, for many, the main reason to come precisely then. July and August are warm and busier, though the crowds thin quickly away from the main trails. September and October bring clear views, cool mornings and the cattle drive down. Winter runs from December to March, with reliable snow and gentle pistes. November and April/May are shoulder seasons when much of the plateau closes.
