The Dolomites combine a UNESCO landscape with a dense cluster of adults-only hotels and starred restaurants, all within an hour or two of Bolzano.
Adults-only is not a niche in South Tyrol but an established segment. Many houses take guests from a minimum age of 14, 16 or 18, which changes the feel of a hotel considerably: quieter spas, longer dinners, no noise at the pool.
The setting helps. The Dolomites were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 for their geology and their vertical rock faces, and the cable cars mean you reach 2,000 to 2,500 metres without any climbing. From the top stations many trails run almost level.

Which valleys suit a couples' holiday?
The valleys differ more than the shared name suggests. Alta Badia is small, Ladin-speaking and the most food-focused. Val Gardena is larger, with woodcarving workshops and a pedestrian centre. The Alpe di Siusi above them is car-free during the day and about as quiet as the Alps get.

When is the best time to visit the Dolomites?
The Dolomites have two clearly separated seasons. Summer runs from mid-June to early October, when the cable cars turn and the mountain huts are open; June and September are the quietest months with the most settled weather and the lowest prices. Winter runs from early December to early April. In November and May most hotels and lifts close — you will find a very still valley, but also a largely shut one.

Frequently asked questions
There is no single rule.
Minimum ages of 14, 16 or 18 are common, and some houses set it at 12. A few are adults-only all year, others only outside the school holidays. The limit is shown with each hotel when you book. If quiet matters to you, check separately whether the spa area has its own age restriction — that is not always the same as the rule for the hotel.
