Why Alpe di Siusi?

Why ski on the Alpe di Siusi?

The pistes lie on a wide high-altitude plateau between 1,680 and 2,350 metres — broad, sunny and connected to Val Gardena.

The Alpe di Siusi, at 56 square kilometres, is Europe's largest high-altitude Alpine meadow and lies between 1,680 and 2,350 metres. Because the terrain is largely flat to gently sloping, the pistes are also different from those in the Dolomite valleys: broad, easy to read and with moderate gradients — ideal for cruising skiers, family holidays and beginners.

That makes the area especially interesting for beginners, families and cruising skiers. Anyone wanting steeper terrain crosses via the connection to Val Gardena — from there the route continues onto the Sellaronda. The Alpe di Siusi belongs to Dolomiti Superski, so a single ski pass covers Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa.

The second reason for the meadow is cross-country skiing. Across the plateau run trails that go for kilometres through open landscape, with the Sciliar and Sassolungo (Langkofel) in view. Add groomed winter walking paths and toboggan runs. Everything is reachable by ski bus from the villages of Castelrotto (Kastelruth), Siusi (Seis) and Fiè allo Sciliar (Völs) down in the valley — or directly from a hotel up top on the meadow.

How do you ski on the Alpe di Siusi?

The Alpe di Siusi is an area for cruising skiers: wide, well-groomed pistes without narrow sections, plus an extensive cross-country network. Anyone looking for more challenge crosses via the connection to Val Gardena. The villages of Castelrotto, Siusi and Fiè allo Sciliar sit below and are connected by ski bus. During the day, the road up onto the meadow is closed to private cars — access is via the gondola from Siusi.

When is the best time for a ski holiday on the Alpe di Siusi?

The season starts in early December and ends in early April. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive; January is quiet after the holidays and snow-reliable. February delivers the most reliable conditions and brings the school half-term holidays. Because the plateau is snow-guaranteed thanks to altitude and full snowmaking coverage, conditions are usually reliable well into March. In November and April the ski area is closed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it is one of the best beginner areas in South Tyrol.

Because the plateau is flat to gently sloping, the pistes are wide, easy to read and free of unpleasantly steep sections. Ski schools and children's areas exist both up on the meadow and in the villages of Castelrotto, Siusi and Fiè allo Sciliar. For a first ski holiday, the area is well suited — and because Val Gardena is next door, more challenging terrain is easily reachable when skills grow.
