Why the Val d'Ega?

Why ski in the Val d'Ega?

The Val d'Ega lies just 20 kilometres from Bolzano and offers, with Latemar-Obereggen and Carezza, around 90 piste kilometres in the heart of the UNESCO Dolomites.

The Val d'Ega begins just east of Bolzano and climbs up between the massifs of the Rosengarten (Catinaccio) and the Latemar. Two ski areas share the valley: the Ski Center Latemar around Obereggen, and Ski Area Carezza at Lago di Carezza (Karersee). Together they add up to around 90 piste kilometres and 31 lifts.

The practical advantage is the proximity. From Bolzano Airport it's only 30 minutes — the shortest transfer of any South Tyrolean ski destination. Anyone flying in the morning is on the piste by midday. Both areas belong to Dolomiti Superski and are connected by a free ski bus. A local Val d'Ega ski pass covers both.

The two areas have different characters. Latemar-Obereggen sits between 1,550 and 2,500 metres, is considered particularly snow-reliable, and with the Latemar Six-Pack — six black runs — plus one of Italy's best snow parks, is the sportier of the two. Carezza sits between 1,200 and 2,337 metres directly at the foot of the Rosengarten, has the more famous backdrop, and is more family-friendly — with the König Laurin gondola and a striking mountain station designed by Werner Tscholl.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

From Bolzano Airport it's only about 30 minutes into the Val d'Ega, because the valley starts directly behind the provincial capital.

The transfer takes you to the hotel; ski equipment can come along. Alternatively, several bus lines run from Bolzano to Nova Levante (Welschnofen), Nova Ponente (Deutschnofen) and Obereggen. Within the valley a free ski bus connects both ski areas, so you can change side during the day.
