Menorca has been under Biosphere Reserve protection since 1993, which has strictly limited construction. Instead of hotel chains and continuous beach promenades, there are individual calas — small coves, often with pale sand and very shallow entry. For small children that's almost ideal, because there's little wave action and children can stand a long way out. The island is also small enough that distances stay short.
Ibiza is livelier and has more choice of restaurants and excursions. The north of the island is markedly quieter than the south, and the old town of Dalt Vila above the harbour is UNESCO World Heritage. Anyone travelling with children should pay careful attention to location and choose houses in the north or east — away from the club zones, in genuinely quiet spots with beach access.

When is the best time to visit the Balearics?
The season runs from May to October. May is mild and green, but the sea for children is often still too cold. June is one of the best months: warm, swimmable and noticeably quieter than high summer. July and August bring heat and the largest crowds — then shade and a hotel pool matter, and prices climb. September is our favourite: warm sea, mild days, fewer visitors. October is still mild but the first hotels start to close. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the routes.
