Why South Tyrol?

Why is South Tyrol suitable for a couple's holiday?

South Tyrol has many hotels that accept adults only — mostly family-run, with generous spa facilities and their own cuisine.

Adults-only isn't a niche in South Tyrol but its own segment. Numerous properties accept guests from a minimum age of 14, 16 or 18 years. That noticeably changes the atmosphere: quieter spa areas, longer dinners, no noise around the pool. Many houses are family-run in the fourth or fifth generation and have set the standard for adults-only hospitality — a category that has become established over the past two decades and now shapes the whole industry.

The journey is short. SkyAlps flies from Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Copenhagen, Warsaw and London direct to Bolzano — flight time one to two hours. From the airport you're in Merano in 30 minutes, Brixen in 40, Alta Badia and Plan de Corones in one to one-and-a-half hours. That opens up a range of regions with distinct characters — from a spa town at 300 metres to Dolomite valleys at 1,700.

On top of that comes the cuisine. In the current Michelin Guide, 25 stars go to South Tyrol — for around 530,000 inhabitants, one of the highest densities in Europe. Anyone wanting to eat well in the evening will find that here, well beyond the famous names, in inns with regional dishes at good levels. That fits the profile of a couple's trip particularly well: a slow evening after a hike or a spa day.

Which regions are suitable for adults-only in South Tyrol?

The regions differ significantly. Merano sits low and mild, with thermal baths and spa promenades. Alta Badia and Plan de Corones lie high in the Dolomites and have the densest starred cuisine in South Tyrol. Brixen is the smallest version: bishop's city, cathedral, Novacella Abbey and the Plose as a mountain — a mix of town and mountain.

When is the best time for a couple's holiday?

For couples, the shoulder months are the most attractive. May and June bring blossom, long evenings and lower prices; September and October bring clear views, the grape harvest and autumn colours. July and August are busier and hot in the valleys. Winter divides: December brings Christmas Markets and the run-up to the holidays; January is the quietest month with reliable snow and low prices; February and March combine ski holiday demand with more sunshine. November and April/early May are shoulder seasons — many hotels close.

Frequently asked questions

There is no single rule.

Common minimum ages are 14, 16 or 18; some houses set the limit at 12. Some hotels are adults-only year-round; others only outside the school holidays. At booking you'll see the minimum age clearly stated. Some hotels also make an exception for older children when booking a family suite outside high season — check ahead if that applies to you. What matters as a common denominator: no children's pool, no children's facilities, and a spa area reserved for adults.
