Why Alta Badia?

Why is Alta Badia good for a couple's holiday?

Alta Badia sits at 1,300 to 1,700 metres right in the Dolomites, and for a valley of this size it has an unusually dense starred cuisine.

Alta Badia is the upper Val Badia, comprising the villages of Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano, Badia and La Val. They sit at 1,300 to 1,700 metres, surrounded by the Sella, Puez and Fanes groups — all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. Ladin is spoken alongside German and Italian, and you notice it on every road sign and every menu.

What is remarkable is the cuisine. In the Michelin Guide 2026, 25 stars go to South Tyrol, several of them to this single valley: La Stüa de Michil in Corvara and the newly starred Restaurant Porcino in Badia. Alongside them stand alpine huts and inns serving Ladin cuisine — Schlutzkrapfen ravioli, Cajincí, barley soup and game — often at a level rarely found at 2,000 metres. For couples focused on food, the density is unusual.

The hotels are largely family-run, in the fourth or fifth generation of the same families. Adults-only houses are concentrated in Corvara and San Cassiano, mostly with generous spa areas. Because the villages are small, evenings stay quiet even in high season; a walk after dinner ends within twenty minutes. And in summer, the Dolomite passes — Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, Passo Valparola — are within reach on foot or by car, each opening a new view of the massifs.

What does Alta Badia offer for a couple's holiday?

Alta Badia lives on two things: the cuisine and the mountains. In the valley, starred restaurants and Ladin inns often lie only a few hundred metres apart. All around, the Dolomite passes — Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, Passo Valparola — link the massifs. In summer they open by car, in winter they are closed but usable for ski touring or on the piste. Around this frame, the adults-only houses group in Corvara and San Cassiano.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For a valley of a few thousand inhabitants, the density is exceptional.

In the Michelin Guide 2026, 25 stars go to South Tyrol, several of them to Alta Badia — including La Stüa de Michil at Hotel La Perla in Corvara and the newly starred Restaurant Porcino in Badia. Equally interesting are the mountain huts on the trails and pistes, which serve Ladin cuisine — Schlutzkrapfen ravioli, Cajincí, barley soup and game — often at a level well beyond typical hut fare. Book starred restaurants in advance; mountain huts operate on a first-come basis at lunchtime.
