Why Corfu?

What defines Corfu?

Corfu is the greenest and best-developed of the Ionian islands, with an old town that has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2007.

Corfu, the northernmost of the Ionian islands, lies close to the Albanian coast. It is markedly greener than the Aegean islands — olive groves, cypresses and pine forests cover the whole island, thanks to the generous winter rains. That gives Corfu a landscape unlike most Greek islands and makes it easier to bear in high summer.

The old town of Corfu Town has been UNESCO World Heritage since 2007. It is framed by Venetian fortresses and shows traces of every ruling power: Venetian alleys, French arcades along the Liston promenade, and British legacies from the years 1815 to 1864 — including cricket, still played on the Spianada. A dense mix, unlike anywhere else in Greece.

The coasts differ significantly. The east is sheltered and shallow — good for families. The west is more spectacular, with bays like Paleokastritsa between wooded rocks, but more open to the sea. The north is mountainous, the south flatter and better-known for its resorts. For a first stay, a base on the east coast is usually the pragmatic choice; for photography-focused visits, the west.

What is there to do on Corfu?

Corfu is well-developed and manageable even without a car. The old town is the cultural centre; the east has the family-friendly beaches; the west, the more spectacular bays. Between the coasts is just under an hour's drive.

The season runs from May to October. In May the island is particularly green with the bloom in full swing, but the sea is still cool. June is warm and still quiet. July and August bring heat and the largest crowds, especially in the south. September is, for many, the best month: warm sea, mild days, fewer visitors. October brings the first rains but remains mild — a good time for walking and the old town. From November to April SkyAlps does not fly the route.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Corfu is the best-developed of the Ionian islands.

Buses run regularly between Corfu Town and the larger coastal towns, and many hotels are within walking distance of the beach. For the smaller coves and the mountainous north, a car is still useful — the bus network doesn't cover those. If your priority is Corfu Town and a hotel on the east coast, you can save the car; for touring the island, book one in advance for July and August.
