Why Hamburg?

Why a city break in Hamburg?

Hamburg combines its harbour, the UNESCO Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie — all set right on the water.

Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and the country's largest seaport. Water shapes everything: the Elbe with the harbour to the south, the Inner and Outer Alster lakes in the middle of the city, and a network of fleets (canals) besides. Hamburg has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined — over 2,500 in total. That makes the city easy to navigate on foot, along water everywhere you go.

The Speicherstadt is the largest historic warehouse complex in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2015, together with the Kontorhaus District. The red brick buildings stand on oak piles in the water — most impressive from the fleet bridges, particularly at dusk, when the buildings are illuminated. Right next to it lies HafenCity, one of the largest inner-city development projects in Europe.

The Elbphilharmonie rises next door on top of an old quay warehouse. The Plaza at 37 metres is publicly accessible and offers a panoramic view over harbour and city — all you need is a free time-slot ticket, no concert visit required. The concert hall itself, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is one of the acoustically finest in the world; concert tickets are often booked months in advance.

What is there to do in Hamburg?

Hamburg is best discovered from the water. The harbour ferries are part of the public transport network and cost no more than a bus ride — one of the cheapest harbour tours anywhere. On land lie the Speicherstadt, Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity in the south; the Alster and old town in the centre; St. Pauli with the Reeperbahn to the west; and Ottensen and Altona to the far west, with village-like character. For a first visit, three full days give you a solid rhythm.

When is the best time to visit Hamburg?

Hamburg has a maritime climate: rarely hot, rarely very cold, but often windy and changeable. From May to September the city is at its liveliest — the Alster loop, harbour terraces and outdoor events are in operation, and evenings stay light for a long time. The Hamburg Harbour Birthday in early May is Europe's largest port festival, with tall ships on the Elbe. In November it turns grey; from mid-November onwards the Christmas Markets run, most attractively at the Rathausmarkt in front of the city hall. January and February are quiet and cold, but with an umbrella you can still put together good days.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes.

The Plaza between the old quay warehouse and the glass superstructure sits at 37 metres and is publicly accessible — all you need is a free time-slot ticket, available online or on site. From there you have a panoramic view over harbour, HafenCity and the old town. The concert hall itself can only be visited with a concert ticket or on a guided tour. Both are worthwhile: the tours cover the architecture, acoustics and construction history — around one hour, several times a day.
