Why Rome?

Why a city break to Rome?

Rome is reachable from Bolzano in 1h 30min and brings antiquity, baroque and the Vatican together in the same city centre.

Rome is the closest large city in the SkyAlps network, reachable in an hour and a half. The historic centre has been UNESCO World Heritage since 1980 and — despite its importance — is surprisingly compact: most well-known sites lie within a few square kilometres and are walkable. For a first visit, three or four days are enough to see what matters, without commuting between quarters.

Antiquity is concentrated along one axis: the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill lie side by side and are visited on a combined ticket. The Pantheon, which has stood for almost 2,000 years and still holds the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome, sits a fifteen-minute walk away. From there, the baroque quarter opens up with the Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain.

The Vatican is a state of its own and a day of its own. St Peter's Basilica and St Peter's Square are freely accessible; the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel charge admission and are almost always full — book a time slot before you fly. In the evenings, the Trastevere quarter west of the Tiber sits at the top of the list for restaurants: narrow lanes, ivy-covered facades, and cuisine that has moved little in twenty years — Roman classics such as cacio e pepe, carbonara and saltimbocca in taverns you'd expect from a film set.

What should you see in Rome?

Rome divides well into two blocks. The ancient part with the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine forms one connected complex. The baroque part with the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain lies to the north of it. The Vatican in the west is a day of its own. For dinner, Trastevere on the west bank of the Tiber is a good bet — closer to the Vatican than the historic centre, but reachable in twenty minutes on foot.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

Rome is a year-round destination, but summer is exhausting: in July and August temperatures regularly climb above 35°C, and queues stand in the sun. April to June and September to October are considerably more pleasant — warm, but bearable, and long evenings for the piazzas. November is often mild with occasional rain; December brings the Christmas period, with the Vatican dressed for Christmas. January and February are quiet and cheap, museums almost empty — winter clothing is fine, snow rare.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Two things you should secure online before travel: the timed ticket for the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel, and the combined ticket for the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine.

Both are booked out days or weeks in advance in high season; walk-up tickets are only sometimes available. For starred restaurants (there are more than twenty in Rome), reservations are advisable. Everything else in the city — Pantheon (free), Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps — is freely accessible and needs no advance booking.
