Why Plan de Corones?

Why ski at Plan de Corones?

Plan de Corones offers 119 piste kilometres and 32 lifts, with a central summit plateau from which all runs radiate outwards.

Plan de Corones is the house mountain of Brunico (Bruneck) and, with 119 piste kilometres, the largest ski area in the Val Pusteria. Pistes run from 920 to 2,275 metres and are served by 32 lifts — one of the highest lift capacities in the Alps. Waiting times are correspondingly short.

The layout is unusually simple: the summit is a broad plateau from which all runs radiate down into the different valleys — to Riscone, Valdaora, Perca and San Vigilio. If you get lost, you just take the next gondola back up to the summit and start again from there. This works particularly well for groups with varying levels — you split up at the top and meet again at the same point after each run.

The pistes are wide and mostly of medium difficulty, with a few demanding runs such as the Sylvester or the Herrnegg. Because almost all ascents are by gondola, even children and beginners get up comfortably. Up top, besides the pistes, there are two museums — the MMM Corones by Zaha Hadid and Museum LUMEN, on mountain photography — and the AlpiNN restaurant of three-starred chef Norbert Niederkofler. On skis you can reach all three within a few minutes.

How is the Plan de Corones ski area laid out?

Plan de Corones works differently from the linear valley areas of the Dolomites. Instead of a long circuit, there is a central summit and runs in all directions. That makes orientation easy and journeys short — and it means that from every ascent point you can reach the summit within a few minutes. Four valley base stations serve the same area, so you can choose accommodation flexibly.

When is the best time for a ski holiday at Plan de Corones?

The season starts in early December and ends in early April. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive and busiest weeks; January is markedly quieter afterwards, with mostly good snow. February delivers the most reliable conditions but brings the school half-term holidays. March combines longer days, sun and still-good snow. In November and April the ski area is closed. Thanks to the plateau altitude, snow reliability is high, and the area is fully covered by snowmaking systems.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Particularly good for groups with varying levels.

Because all runs converge at the summit plateau, the group can split up and meet again at the top, without long journeys. Most pistes are wide and of medium difficulty; there are children's areas and ski schools at all base stations. For freeriders and advanced skiers, the more demanding runs (Sylvester, Herrnegg, Piculin) offer challenge, but the area's strength is variety with easy orientation.
